       Future improvements and mods
By: OldeGoat Date: August 24, 2016, 2:54 pm

At the moment I'm enjoying my recently acquired NF Civile, and
while I don't want to rip it apart yet, I think enough of it to
want to prolong the life of the beast, so I'd like to know if
there are any must do fixes for engine and gearbox, please.

At Stafford an expert on the singles told me that the OEM valve
heads can come off and the head oil line is suspect. He races so
perhaps valve head failure is not so likely chuffing around.
Anyway I got the braided U bend replaced whilst the wiring was
being sorted, and sure enough the original oil lines are a
disaster waiting to happen. About 1mm thick.... Mine had started
to seep after a prolonged run at 70. Oh and don't use car oil.

I don't think that any of these is a must, but you can:
       - increase compression
       - bore it out
       - install improved oiling and additional filter
       - change oil pump for a bigger one
       - install a second sparkplug
       - change rear sprocket
       - change the screen oil filter to a modern one

Alloy bush in timing case wears, reducing oil pressure. I've
seen reports on people fitting a bronze bush and an oil seal,
but have no idea how effective that might be.
There are many modifications possible to the lubrication system,
from a kit to add another feed to the valve gear, oil filter,
mods to the pressure relief valve, improvements to the camshaft
lubrication, etc. The list goes on and on, and no doubt these
are well thought out, and probably effective in terms of
       longevity.
I think a lot depends on what you expect to do with it, and what
condition it's in when you start.
I have 4 bikes, and the NF is used for local runs and classic
events only; not for touring or long distances.
Consequently, although I've had it for 14 years, it's done less
than 20,000 km, and I've got by with frequent oil changes, which
I'd say was the most important preventive maintenance that can
       be done.
This was one of the Italian army imports, supposedly with a
       'new' engine.
I'd keep an eye on valve guide wear, because sticking valves
seem to be a problem that occurs over time, and I assume it's
down to guide wear, because they don't do it when new.
Smaller and lighter valves are available, but one member dropped
a valve on these, so not a solution.
If it were me, and if you're not going to be doing huge
mileages, I'd leave it alone, but if you're a confirmed
tinkerer, and have deep pockets, there's a cornucopia of
       possible mods out there...
Take a look at Leafman's thread on advrider.com for a variety of
options, and guzzitreff.de (but it's all in German)

Apologies for my tardy response. I must admit that when I first
bought this bike I was tempted to strip the engine to see what
I've got, as it's obviously an unknown quantity, but I wanted to
ride it so have just attended to oil changes and a couple of
other odds n sods. The flywheel has been off at some stage, and
not by someone with the proper tool judging by the battered
corners of the castellated ring nut, so who knows what's do do
with the machine. Having said that, I've been out on it a few
times, and it's run ok, and I've enjoyed riding it more than
riding my AJS, but a strip down is never far from my thoughts!
Due to a worn / flaked area on one of the silencers I've had
them both re chromed, but can't say I'm very happy with the
result, although they're better now than they were. I
considered buying a new pattern silencer, but didn't.

I put one of these on as the original "over and under" was
showing signs of corrosion, makes a lovely sound.

A Harley Sportster pipe and a large, square chisel worked for
me, although possibly I need a larger chisel, as it's still a
       bit restricted I think...
       Hate the stock silencer...
