Oil Pressure Light on at Tickover
By: Tigertone2000 Date: July 27, 2016, 4:43 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Hi
Newby here - both to this site and NF's so please be kind....
I recently bought an NF via Ebay - unseen until it actually
turned up in a van (yes, I know.......!) When I've more time,
I'll go into more detail but for now, let's just say that one
should never assume anything............(sigh!)
The past week or so have proved a steep learning curve but I'm
now at the point where it starts, goes and stops (eventually...)
The motor doesn't knock or rumble but seems quite 'clattery' at
tick-over (unfortunately, I've no prior experience of NF's and
don't know of another to compare it with so I don't know what's
normal). Today I realised that what I assumed was the charging
light coming on at tickover is actually the oil pressure light
(please don't laugh.......!) and my slightly panicky question is
whether this is normal? Like I say, the motor doesn't knock or
rattle under load and the oil light goes out as soon as the revs
are increased from (the delightfully slow) tickover. Please can
someone either reassure me or plunge me into (even more) gloom
and despair? While I'm asking questions, I might as well ask
'the oil question' - assuming the motor is OK and I change the
oil (it looks new but I've no idea what it is), can I run it on
straight 40? (which I have stocks of for use in my Triumph TRW)
Thanks in advance for anyone who stops laughing long enough to
reply
Regards,

We don't laugh at you; all here once started with a first bike .
I overhaul and adapt larger Guzzi oil pumps for the NF; but all
is sold out at the moment. What I still have and sell is a
special cranckshaft oilseal set, which improves your oilpressure
by reducing oil leakage.Pics can be found on the other NF board
at ADV Rider. Costs € 30,- excl. shipping .Some Pics of your NF

NF's are a bit clattery. To be on the safe side, set the valves
to the proper settings.
Don't be tempted to run the tickover too slow, even though it
may seem delightful. Speed it up a bit and stop worrying. Any
bike is going to have low oil pressure at 250rpm.
You mean you didn't immediately change the oil when you got the
bike? First job - always. You have no idea how long that crap
has been in there.
I use 15 /40 Rotella (it has no friction modifiers) but you can
use any 20/50 motorcycle oil. You can use whatever you like, of
course, but oil is cheap and peace of mind is priceless.
The NF is a robust piece of equipment. Get it running well, then
ride, ride, ride. Google 'Nick Adams Nuovo Falcone' for enough
video and trip reports to drive you to distraction.
Good luck with the bike
Nick

Welcome, and ask away; that's what the forum's here for...
First things first. Get a new oil pressure sender unit. A mate
was coming back from Italy on his V11, with a bodge-up repair to
a split breather, when the oil light came on. Of course he
thought he'd lost all the oil (again) but it turned out to be a
faulty sender unit.
My light doesn't flicker, even when the tickover is very slow,
so if the sender is actually OK, you may have an issue, as
Redsingle has suggested.
How do you know it's the oil light by the way? If it's from the
position on the binnacle, I'd check the wiring before going any
further. It's a rat's nest in there, and extremely easy to get
the wires mixed up. My generator light does flicker at slow
tickover....
Easy check; pull in the valve lifter, and with a cold engine,
kick frantically until you get a good spin going on the flywheel
On mine, that's enough to make the oil light go out.
Difficult to know if your noise is normal without hearing it,
but mine sounds like a can of nails. There are two tappet
settings in the manual; one very tight and quiet, and one much
wider and noisy. I'm one of those who prefer noisy to burnt
valves.

Can you tell us more about the bike?
Mileage, history, pix?
Where are you located? Edit: I'm an idiot - you already told
us... :-[
If you're in the UK, Halfords Classic 20W50 oil is what I use,
and if you keep an eye open for their special offers, it can be
very. very cheap too.
Good luck, and once again, welcome to the merry band.

Gentlemen,
Thank you so much for your replies - I do feel better already!
I will indeed introduce myself and the bike in the very near
future (I promise!) - at the moment, I am spending a great deal
of my time just sorting out and getting to grips with this
strange Italian interloper (my Triumph has already become
jealous and started leaking from a petrol tap - I think bikes
might be like women -I have very little luck with them
either...!)
I will write again soon
