Steering head bearings
By: cryospeed1 Date: March 17, 2016, 5:58 am

Hi I am well into the dismantling of my falcone prior to
painting. On dismantling the forks the head bearings are shot.
Both races and balls. Can anyone suggest a source of replacement
please. I looked on Guzzi bits and could not find any. Thanks

Update spoke to Guzzibits and NLM but neither could help. NLM
have given me details for Stein dense who I have e mailed. Guzzi
bits offered to speak to one of their manufacturers if I get
stuck. I went to simply bearings and thought I would go to taper
bearings but there is no exact match for my dimensions of 27
x50.
Further dismantling has revealed worn swinging arm bushes so
again anyone know of a supplier of these. Thanks.
The hub bearings were us but fortunately replacements were easy
to source.

Head bearings now located and are on the way after taking out a
second mortgage. I got them from Holland. The swinging arm
bushes are on order from Italy. The bike is now stripped and
been degreased prior to painting. There are a few battle scars.
There is some singing to the paintwork so I wonder if it has
been in a fire. Can anyone advise the size of drive chain needed
so I can shop around a bit for one.

Thanks for the information. The head bearings arrived in genuine
Moto guzzi packaging. Sadly after shelling out £136 it was 4
cups rather than 4 cones all slightly different sizes. None of
them are the correct size and one of them was rusty. They are
now back with the supplier in Holland and there has been no word
despite it being a week since they got them. The new swinging
arm bushes arrived from Italy and after some dramas with a blow
lamp and a big hammer and drift the old ones were removed and
the new ones are in place. The bike is all painted just need the
head bearings now. If the Dutch cant provide the right ones I
have found that Pirner in germany do a modified taper bearing to
fit. It is less than half the price too. It is just a shame I
didnt go here first.

Been offline after a couple of weeks in China, where the forum
of the Mighty Falcone is apparently considered subversive enough
to be blocked, along with Facebook and Google....
i still have the stock bearings installed in mine, but
understand that the taper roller conversion is based on stock
SKF bearings, that are ground down to fit the recesses for the
stock cups.
The kit is available from Pirner, and cost about 89 Euros back
in 2014:

The bearings that were in were knackered as the hard face hard
worn through in places. The dutch have given me a full refund so
I am now in the process of ordering the taper bearings from
Pirner. They are about 100 euro with the postage. They seem to
have quite a bit of NF stuff.
