trying to get off the endcap thats outside the front sprocket.
supposed to be left hand thread. says to tap it off with a punch
in the book I have. not budging. not budging at all. any ideas
if there is some knack to this or what? Or can I get one so I
can take the grinder to the one on the bike?HELP PLEASE. Engine
is in bits otherwise and this has to come off so I can split the
       cases

Bugger! It must be pretty tight, or well seized. Have you tried
       putting some heat on it?

Yep; you'll get there eventually. :D
I'd have been inclined to get a propane torch on it to break the
       seizure onto the shaft.

just make/buy /borrow the proper tool , and use a rattle gun.
using stillsons and a piece of alloy puts all the force on the
gear dogs, wich are prone to shear off anyway.
