Thin sheet plate under flywheel cover
By: Bruno Date: June 2, 2015, 8:42 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I have just had the flywheel cover off to measure up to see if i
can make my own 'open' cover. While I was there I took out the
thin metal plate that appears to stop some of the chain oil
flying about, and took a pic.I seem to remember that Banquo was
       interested in it.

       Thanks Bruno.
I must take another look, but I'm 99% certain mine doesn't have
one, and I've never seen one on anyone else's either.
       Where exactly does it fit?

So my bike might be a factory prototype, must be worth a
       fortune!!

       Nah.
You're stuffed now you've taken it off..
If you had just left it where it was, then it would have been
       worth a fortune... ;D
So, where does it go exactly?

It's back in place.Wide part is at the top.Fits at the front of
the rear section sandwiched between the crankcase and the outer
cover.Cover screws hold it in place and should indicate where it
       fits.Covers part of front sprocket.

Bizarre; it does look like a proper pressing, and not some
       home-made part.

It's very well made, with that strengthening channel too
difficult for a home mechanic to make as neat.
Makes sense to keep any chain oil from getting onto the
       generator belt.

       Hi Bruno,
could it be that you have an engine with the little flywheel (
225mm diameter )!? In this case there is no inner aluminium
cover plate and this steel plate is mounted. I have a 1969 red
NF with this solution - there are not much of them, it was
built only in the first serie.
And thanks for your thread, I have got the bike dismantled and
did not know the function and position of the plate. Even in the
first sparepart catalog where the little flywheel is shown and
has a partnumber I did not find this plate.
       Have a good day

Little flywheel? I did not know there was more than one size.Do
you know what the other size is? why more than one size?
I did wonder what that large thing was in the parts book,I
thought it must be a gasket that I don't have.
My bike had only done 8000 K when I got it and it looks very
original. The flywheel assembly looked untouched when I first
       took the cover off.

The bigger one has 270mm Diameter. The smaller flywheel gives
better shifting, less motorbreaking etc. Nobody knows the
reasons for the bigger one in the NFs which have been built
after 1970 - it is only better when you will go verry slow for
parades and so. Most of the owners I know have lathed them
       lighter.
There are different covers as you can see on the pic too.
