The bike I got from George had what look to be pattern ones on
which are fine. They dont seem big enough though to take the
stronger front brake cable. He gave me the two original levers
fitted to the bike. A very substantial one for the clutch with
finger grooves and a tomasselli one without for the front brake.
They were both badly bent and probably past it. I am therefore
guessing that the bikes may have had one type fitted to all of
them and as they broke in service they fitted whatever was to
hand. (pardon the pun). My aim now is to have two the same that
will accommodate the heavier front brake cable. It seemed easy
when I started.

Shouldn't be too hard to resolve. The bike had some minor
accident damage to the left side when it came in from what used
to be Yugoslavia. The left footrest was bent, hence the damage
to the lower half of the flywheel cover. I guess the left hand
clutch lever may have been damaged or broken in that. When you
say the new levers aren't big enough for a heavy duty cable, do
you mean the holes for the nipples? Maybe they could simply be
bored out to suit?
Just found pix from eBay of when it was for sale:

Looks a lot better than that now... :D

If you get a cable made, you could have it done with a smaller
nipple.Venhill have millions of nipples,I used to have to do a
stock check!

Hi again and thanks for the picture. George had obviously done a
lot of work on the bike. I got the end plate welded up and
cleaned the dynamo and greased the bearings before re assembling
it. The brush end can be undone by taking out a rubber bung
which gives access to a screw. Take that out and the brush end
cover comes off. Thats now back in situ with a new belt. I
thought I would have a look at the points and it could really do
with a new set and a condenser. Does anyone have an idea where I
might get these. They are listed on Guzzi bits but on a 1 to 3
week delivery. With regards to the existing levers there is not
a lot of metal on the end where the cable and nipple sit. I
would have had to make the cable groove wider and drill out the
nipple hole. I thought this might make the front brake lever a
bit on the weak side.
Time to put the tools away it looks like a thunder storm is a
brewing.

Thanks for the tips on the Dynamo strip. I bought points and 2
condensers off eBay about 12 years ago, and don't even know
where they are now, as they have never been needed. The
condenser, although advertised as an NF part, looked more
generic, and I guess pretty much any one would do. It looked
just the same as the Lucas one on my old Hillman Imp, and I
imagine the capacitance won't change much from one vehicle to
another. I haven't seen either advertised on eBay for years, so
Gutsibits or one of the German or Italian suppliers are probably
your best bet.

there are a lot of poor quality condensers on the market now.A
classic car mechanic I know has problems finding good ones so
buys cheap ones in bulk and resigns himself to changing them
more often.
I have looked at the points on my NF and it looked like no-one
had been inside the cover since the bike left the factory.

Well bike started straight away for its trip to the MOT station
about 5 miles most of it farmland. The front brake improved a
bit on the way there and the bike sounded lovely. Very
comfortable too. There was a bit of clutch slip when the
throttle was opened up rather than changing down a gear. After
about 4 miles there was a misfire which after about 1/4 of a
mile cleared itself. Alan at the MOT was fascinated by the bike
especially when I started it up. It passed with no advisories
and I had a great trip back despite the fact it was now raining.
It is now taxed ,insured and MOT d. Talking of Insurance I added
it to my rider policy for an additional £11.00. Sadly they also
levy £35 for making the 1 minute adjustment. It also seemed
strange doing hand signals I will look at Indicators for it.
Thanks for all the help

Well done Cryospeed; you're officially on-board now... :)
I share your despair at amending insurance policies, having been
in the same place many a time.
Tip: if you're buying another bike, do it at renewal time... :D
