       Crankshaft Oil Seal
   DIR By: Nuffield
       Date: April 29, 2015, 7:39 am

       Hello all,
My 1970 Falcone has developed an oil leak which appears to be
coming from behind the flywheel. Before I get involved with
removing the flywheel does anyone know if it is possible to
replace the crankshaft seal from the outside without splitting
       the crankcase?
If its an easy job I will get on and do it as soon as I get a
new seal, but if its an engine out job it can wait until the
       winter.
       Nick.

       Hello,
Think I managed to find the answer in the Paul Friday resources
       under "removing the flywheel".
Looks as though it may be possible to change the seal, he
recommends drilling the old one and screwing self tappers in to
it to be able to lever/pull it out.
Think I will live with the oil leak for now and look at sorting
it when the salt is on the roads.
       Nick.

You beat me to it. Have you explored with the flywheel cover
off, and everything cleaned up first with Gunk?
I had oil weeping out of the LH footrest mount, and convinced
myself it was the crankcase joint, but it turned out to be a
rocker box to head leak on the other side, that was somehow
       finding it's way through....

No not yet, going to have look today. I did think it might
possibly be leaking from the gearbox output shaft, as thats in
       the same area.
       Nick.

       Hopefully simple and easy!

Cover removed and it is definately the crankshaft seal that is
       leaking.
Unfortunately this has revealed a couple of bodges, the flywheel
has a single large nut with a grub screw retaining it instead of
the usual two nuts with left and right hand threads, so I am
       currently making a flywheel puller.
But worse by far, the gearbox shaft has the nut that retains the
kickstart ratchet "welded" on, so to replace either the
kickstart ratchet, spring or front sprocket will involve a
grinder and destroy the shaft. So I think I will be doing an
engine strip over the winter to replace the gearbox 2nd shaft
and find out what other horrors are lurking.

Bad news. One the plus side, the nut pair for the flywheel is
still available, new. I thing I paid about £15 for mine.
I guess you might be able to save the mainshaft with careful
removal of the weld, and a rethread, but I suppose it must have
been pretty bad for Mr Bodger to take that extreme course of
       action...

Better news, on closer inspection the nut is not welded to the
mainshaft, but has another nut welded on to the front of it, so
I shall remove both and see what state the shaft is in. I might
be able to make up a new nut to tidy things up a bit.
I think I will keep the current flywheel fixing as it is simple
and it works, as does my homemade flywheel puller :)

       That's more like it... 8)
Pix of the flywheel puller always welcome!
Did you find flywheel nut and locking ring, or can you recover
       the ones you have?
None on eBay that I can find right now.

I wont be able to use a flywheel locking ring as my flywheel has
been modified and no longer has the internal left hand thread in
it. I think that the face has been machined flat. The nut is
fitted to the end of the crankshaft and is retained by a
grubscrew through the flange on the nut and in to a drilling in
the face of the flywheel. A bit crude but it seems to work and
showed no signs of coming loose, the flywheel was very tight on
the taper and with no locking ring the only way to remove it was
       with a puller.
