Gudgeon pin interchangability
DIR By: Nitram

Hi NF folk,
Just wondering if anyone knows whether I can use a gudgeon pin
(or "wrist pin"/ "piston pin") from some other Guzzi, in the NF.
It's 22mm diameter and 75mm long. I just realised (Dumb eh !
:-[ Should have measured it when I pulled it apart, and before
I'd already ordered rings and gaskets etc etc from overseas....
:-[ ) that it's more than a little worn and should be replaced.
If it's the same as something else then there may be some point
in hunting around Guzzi (or Ducati ? ) places here in Australia,
rather than chasing one up from Europe.
Any ideas ?
Ta

Sorry Nitram; no idea. I suppose you've seen this, but at €80
it's a bit steep for a mere gudgeon pin.

€12.50 from here seems more like it...

You can afford airmail at that.... ;D
Do you have a new bush as well? I assume it might need reamed in
any case, so if you have a used one as a pattern, it might be as
well to get one machined at your local shop?
FWIW V35 and V50 are 15mm x 56mm, so miles out, and you're as
likely to find the right size of some car as for another
Guzzi...
BMW airheads and VW boxer air-cooled engines seem to use 22mm,
but the airhead seems to be 67mm long

and the VW length isn't specified, although this photo makes it
look too short. Try your Mahle stockist, as there are various
big bore VW engines:

Thanks Banq.
I rang around a couple of Guzzi and BMW places today, and drew a
blank. I think, generally speaking, these days if you don't have
a VIN number or a part number- they don't want to know you.
::) I suspect that the guys on the other end of the phone in
these shops have never actually seen a gudgeon pin, other than
in a parts diagram. The idea of digging one out and running the
verniers over it is......beyond the pale. ???
Fortunately there's a VW place that works on old aircooled
VeeDubs on my way home from work, and the bloke was interested
in the Falcone. :) He gave me a good gudgeon pin (I think from
a 2.0l Kombi engine) that is exactly the right size (22mmx75mm).
Unfortunately, it has a much thicker wall and weighs nearly 50%
more than the Guzzi one. I could drill the centre out, but it's
as hard as hell and ............ it'd be a shame if it broke
etc...... :'(
Might have to try for one from Gawa. Just have to wait a week
or two for it to arrive. But that's OK. NF's are all about
teaching us patience........... ;)
Thanks again,
Nitram

Roundbarrel big blocks(and most likely all two valve) are 22mm x
60mm with a wall thickness of 3.5mm.... doesnt look useful
martin sorry :( :(
Do these NF's have a much longer little end bush than the twins
at 24mm?

The NF's little end bush is 26mm wide.
At 75mm long, the gudgeon pin, like everything else NF, is
probably overengineered.
It seems the R100 BMW also has a 22x75 gudgeon, but with a wall
thickness over 4mm, its even weightier than the VW one.
It's looking to me like I'll need to track down a NOS Nuovo
Falcone item from Europe......and a bush to match.
Cheers,
Nitram

You wouldn't drill it out, but your local machine shop could
probably grind it out to size.
Not worth the risk though, is it?
