The armchair is surrounded by embroidered pillows – some with
flowers, others with birds, one with the face of Andrés Manuel
López Obrador. The spacious dining room shines with its
paintings, its decorations and an extensive library. I take some
photos of the living room that, of course, turn out wrong. I
then see Elena coming down the stairs. She is dressed in pink. A
pink sweatshirt, pink pants, the only thing missing is some pink
shoes. But no, she is wearing white sneakers. "Oh, excuse me,
I'm just a little sick today," she says as she goes downstairs.

you. Guilt is wise. But it is impossible
to recalibrate: tomorrow I will no longer be in Mexico. The
author of La noche de Tlatelolco and Hasta no verte Jesús mio
and winner of the 2013 Cervantes Prize sits in an armchair and,
like an experienced interviewer, asks me some questions before I
start asking them. This is my fear: the difficulty of
interviewing Elena Poniatowska lies in interviewing an
interviewer.

She may be, as she actually is, a chronicler and a writer, but
she who has read some of her interviews collected in the Todo
México volumes she knows that the gift of questioning pursues
her. And there is nothing more difficult than asking a
questioner. Except for her, who made direct questioning and
intervention and comments in interviews an art (as demonstrated
by her "failed" interview with the Catholic writer François
Mauriac, Nobel Prize winner in 1952, in which, after confessing
that had not read it, he ended up carrying out a hilarious
interview – much better than if it had gone “well” –, which the
author of Nudo de viboras and The Lamb himself praised.
