Hey, some people have mentioned that they have raised valuable
points in their NFL UK fan committee application e-mail. I have
created this thread so we can post and share them.

If I were elected to the NFL UK fan committee, I would firstly
like to discuss and solidify our role, i.e. it is of my opinion
that our role is to represent every fan or potential fan of the
NFL in the UK and help to increase and grow our fanbase.
Therefore at the meeting I would like to discuss the following;
I feel that fans and potential fans in the UK fall into four
broad categories;
1. Hardcore NFL fans who have a team that they follow
passionately
2. "Playoff" fans, fans who will tune in for the Superbowl and
some of the playoffs but not the regular season and will not
follow a particular team
3. People who have a friend/partner etc. who is a fan but are
not a fan themselves
4. People who have a little interest
Growing the NFL fanbase in the UK, in my opinion, requires
targeting these four different groups. Each of these groups has
different needs and demands in order to improve their NFL
experience and to ultimately grow their numbers.
For example the first group would enjoy their experience more
with more media coverage of their teams and the NFL as a whole,
through more coverage in local newspapers, increased tv coverage
of some of the extensive NFL films works, and increased exposure
to team-specific material such as podcasts and newspapers (I
myself regularly listen to a Patriots themed podcast and read an
online patriots newspaper). Perhaps an online team themed email
could be sent on a regular basis to fans informing them of media
coverage of their team for the coming month.
For groups two and three the focus should be on understanding
rules, history of the game with the ultimate goal of turning
them into fans of a particular team. I feel a lot of the
material on NFLUK.com and the NFL films material is outstanding
in this respect and as such the focus of discussion should be
how we can make this more available these groups of fans.
For the fourth group the focus should be on how we can promote
the game to them with the goal of turning them into passive fans
and ultimately group one fans.
From an overall perspective I would also like to discuss
promoting flag and touch football for all ages for both men and
women, I have seen the success of promoting tag rugby across all
ages and both sexes (having played rugby myself) I feel this
could help to establish an interest from a grassroot level
upwards and could be promoted as a very good social event. I
also would like to discuss how we could encourage more bars and
pubs to show NFL games and perhaps have American themed nights
with wings pitchers of beers etc. ( I found from experience in
Belfast, when no where was showing the 2010 Superbowl, and have
also seen how packed bars showing the game in in Dublin the
night of the 2008 and 2009 Superbowl).
I feel that there is a vast amount of media available to fans,
much more than other sports, and our goal should be to connect
this media that is already there to fans and potential fans. The
means in which we do this would be what I would most like to
discuss at the meeting.

very interesting read Andy, I would argue there is a 5th group,
'those in denial'! - these are generally sports lovers who argue
against the game without really giving it a chance Anyhow one
such doubter recently confessed to me that there was nothing
like throwing the ball, referring to a beach game i organised
when i was younger. So I agree with you growth may well be
addressed through particiapation, maybe a varaint on the main
game could be the answer -like beach american football!
Hi!
I would love the opportunity to join the committee and feel I
could be a valued member.
I am 22, from Edinburgh, Scotland and have been a fan of the
patriots for well over 10 years.
Many immediately label me in the "bandwagon" group due to the
patriots success however this is not the case. The first time I
saw the pats play, they got beat and I decided to then follow
(what I thought at the time) to be the underdogs. As a long term
avid fan, I often find that in the UK, we struggle deeply to
follow the sport without having to pay a premium. This would
perhaps be my main point at the meeting.
In order to watch your team play, we only have a few options
here (better than some countries, I know). Option 1 is the NFL
Game Pass. In my opinion, this is ridiculously overpriced so
that really only leaves two more choices. Sky Sports (fantastic
coverage) and free viewings on terrestrial TV (not so good).
Out with watching the sport, most of us want to buy merchandise.
This again is a massive problem. The NFLUK shop isnt great and
out with that, finding any jerseys other than the "superstars"
is a nightmare. More selection or even a rolling selection of
stock would be fantastic.
The last point is events. As far as i can find, all current
official NFLUK events are held in London. I completely
understand why, however, there are more of us out here.
Superbash looks great however 99% of us never go and many really
dont even get the chance. Why not expand and have numerous
events. Even stick to regional hotspots like London, Cardiff,
Manchester and say Glasgow. That would make the events far more
accessible to all.
Having said all of this, I really do believe that NFLUK do a
great job over here and I cant wait to see my Pats play at
Wembley again (although the cost of flights + hotels + food does
get me down slightly).
Long Time Fan,
Graham
My bad attempt at kissing ass...
