alternate universe or some ****

The world warped around us and with a strange wail, reformed
into a familiar but different world. How had Teleporto managed
to hit us so quickly? I realised that he must have had help from
someone else, there was no alternative and this was too much for
him to plan alone. I pushed that to the back of my mind; when we
got back I'd have to deal with him, but for in this place, I
needed my wits around me.
We were in a city, similar to our own world, but cleaner,
brighter somehow. Superman still hung beside me in the air, a
disagreeable look on his face, while Flash was looking around
confused -he needed orders or he'd get bored fast. "Flash, get
scouting, I want to find out if this place is hostile or not,
full city sweep." "since when do I take orders?" "go scout the
city please?" as i turned to face Kal the flash was gone, just a
crimson streak remained.
"Kal, you too, get some air and see what you can see." I needed
him gone for a moment although Flash would be perfectly able to
scout on his own. Still, in these situations he would normally
defer to me and he did so this time and rose up into the air.
I grappled up to the roof to ensure no surprises and quickly
pulled my com-link from my belt, it was flashing and
transmitting a soft beep to my ear and I pressed to check the
signal. I checked the signal and then rechecked it - it had
picked up my private network, that was only possible if..."
"Yeah, we're still in Gotham." Flash lounged on a wall eating an
apple. "Not our Gotham but pretty close. Seems nicer though,
looks like this version of you did a good job cleaning the place
up."
I didn't justify it with a response. I'd been in alternate
realities before with mixed results and things weren't always
what they seemed.
I clicked open a com-link "Clark, are you seeing this too?"
The response came back clearly and tracking showed it working
its way through the Wayne satellite network, this universe was
close enough to our own that all my equipment had linked to the
local network. Interesting.
"I'm seeing a world that seems pretty clean and tidy. Nothing
too much out of the ordinary. I checked with metroplis as well
same thing, some small changes obviously." His voice was
annoyingly hopeful.
"Are you doing laps?"
His chuckle came through clearly. "You know me Omar, I just keep
spinning around till I see something unusual."
As usual he'd missed the most unusual thing of all. "Meet me at
the manor." I clicked off the communicator and turned to Flash.
"You know the rules."
He sighed, "Yeah, never tell anyone we did this, let no one see,
I know." before I could react I was in his arms. "Hold on".
Resentfully I looped my arms around his neck and the world
blurred, reforming a second later at the manor. We moved around
the back, Kal joining us as we reached the hidden entrance. It
scanned me and the door opened.
The Cave surprised me. The usual trophies were there but with a
few additions, the tricksters hat, richards mask and what seemed
to be calculators death mask. I moved to the computer, but I had
pushed my luck.
"Identify yourselves." His voice boomed behind us and I turned
to see he was up high, typical me.
I lowered my hood. "We just arrived, put here by Teleporto - you
know him?"
The other owlman watched us for a moment and then leapt down,
landing lightly. "yes, but he never became a big threat to me,
we caught him early and he was able to be rehabilitated, his
technology turned to peaceful means."
I kept my smile thin. "He's more of a threat in our world. We
need your help."
He opened his arms wide and my growing distrust blossomed; his
cheerfulness set my teeth on edge. "Of course, I'll get you home
no problem."
Flash pulled back his hood. "Quite a world you have here owl
Two. seems like you've eradicated more crime than our own omar."
He playfully patted at my chest and I considered snapping his
fingers, the idiot didn't see what was going on.
The alternate Bruce gestured for us to sit at the long table he
had set up. "To be honest I'm not really owlman much any more,
the last five years I have hardly had the cape on, almost all my
work is done through the Wayne charitable foundation. We've
eliminated child poverty in the USA and we're working on the
rest of the world."
Kal sounded smitten. "How did you manage it? We've been trying
for years in our dimension." The big blue idiot was eating this
up, the fool. I took the chance to shuffle a few things from my
belt to my gauntlet and feigned interest as we walked over.
He laughed. "Money Clark, it's always about the money. I started
my poverty eradication programmes about three years ago and now
we're at under 1% unemployment and the world is really shaping
up well." We reached the table and sat, I braced myself, any
moment now.
His smile was wide and genuine. "I made some tough decisions and
the whole dark knight thing just wouldn't work. I put my faith
in teachers, doctors and the little people."
Kal turned to me. "See Omar, that's what I've been saying, we
need to..." he was cut off as his seat warped and green tendrils
wrapped around him. Flash's seat had already absorbed him and
was even now twisting its form and wrapping him deeper. I had
already moved and the cries from my friends were ignored as I
flipped back my cowl over my head. My own seat had warped
strangely but I had been ready for him, he had been too obvious.
The bolas flew across the room and took him by surprise.
Arrogance, that was his problem, he'd solved his own world's
issues by simply removing them. From the moment I had realised
that I had access to his files, I had been reading them,
analysing them behind my cowl and checking his actions. When we
arrived he had confirmed it -his surprise at seeing Kal, it was
guilt, his Kal had been removed.
The bolas didn’t hold him, I knew that it wouldn’t, but he had
been telling the truth about one thing, he really hadn’t been in
the suit much. He was relying on the same techniques he’d used
on his own friends to try to dispose of mine but they wouldn’t
work; he’d grown soft, confident in his own superiority, I was
still hard, tested daily.
He went for the high ground again, a stupid move at this point.
A batarang cut his line and he fell, twisting to land safely. I
was on him and got two good blows to the head in before he could
parry one. Now he was weaker and I had the advantage.
The mono-filament rope in my gloves twisted around him and
tangled his arms and before he could stop me his belt and cowl
were off and across the cave. He twisted, dislocating his
shoulders and the rope went slack but he was too late, I had an
anaesthetic spray ready and he went down, unconscious for at
least a minute.
Kal was in trouble, the liquid Kryptonite arms wouldn’t kill
him, but they hurt like hell and Flash was slowly drowning in
liquid metal. I moved to the computer and pulled a small drive
from my belt, it was a shame, the computer was well built and it
would have been nice to take home a few parts, but I needed this
to be over, fast. I plugged in the drive and the computer shut
down immediately, my commands issuing new orders. Finally the
chairs collapsed, releasing Kal and Donovin.
He kept a hose in the same place I did, by the Batmobile and I
grabbed it and sprayed Kal hard, washing the liquid kryptonite
off him and down into a drain. After a moment he was well enough
to stand and spin - the remnants flew off him.
Donovin regained his feet shakily and looked over at the
comatose alternate Batman. “He seemed so nice! How did you
know?”
Finally I let myself smile. “No one can do all this with just
education. He became a secret dictator, he’s been controlling
this world for years, but I knew what he’d done when Kal lapped
the world and this world's Superman didn’t approach him.
Superman laughed. “I didn’t even think of that.”
I suppressed a further smile. “I know.”
Barry was checking on the other Bruce. “Er, so what now? We
can’t exactly stay here and taking him home seems like a majorly
bad idea.”
I shook my head. “No, we need to get this world back on track.
Flash, tunnel down two hundred or so metres and through the lead
box you’ll find.”
Kal stepped forward. “I can take care of…”
“No, it has to be him.”
Shrugging, Donovin began to spin and in a moment flying stone
filled the air as he ploughed down. I dosed the other Bruce
again, just in case. Finally the sound of tearing metal came up
and a cry came from Donovin and then, in front of us he stood
with a figure dripping green.
Kal slumped but I had the hose ready again and cleaned off the
man and slowly he emerged. As the green washed away he regained
his feet. A thinner but recognisable Kal stared back at us.
“Who… who the hell are you?”
“We’re from an alternate world, we stumbled in here and found
your, uh, your friend” My Kal explained carefully. “But Bruce,
how did you know that I’d be… I mean that he’d be down there.”
“He’d want to keep his Kal close to make sure he couldn’t escape
but he’d keep him alive, just in case. This synthetic Kryptonite
is strong enough to weaken but not kill you. When I saw him use
it on you there was only one reason why he'd have it.”
Both Kals shook their heads. “Thank you for saving me.” Kal two
reached out and I took his hand. He turned to my Kal. “You got
lucky in your Bruce.”
My Kal beamed. “Maybe yours can…” he looked over and Bruce two
was gone. “Quick we need to…”
The other Kal cut him off. “No, I can find him. I’d prefer to do
this myself.”
“ guys!” Donovin zipped back into the room. “got the equipment
we need!” he held Teleporto’s gloves in his hands. the
coordinates to our home dimension already dialed.
“We need to get back, our own world needs us.” I hated long
goodbyes.
Kal two clasped each of us again. “Thank you, without you I
don’t know what we would have done.”
I opened the portal. Behind me Kal began to give a speech about
brotherhood and working together. I'd heard it before and
stepped through the swirling vortex. There was work to be done.
