Germany thus sent an important signal to its European partners
that it is ready to assume greater responsibility within the
framework of the Union's common security and defense policy. At
the same time, security in Europe remains largely dependent on
NATO's ability to form alliances. Since the annexation of Crimea
in 2014, the defense provided by the Alliance has gradually
slipped to the center of our security policy.
It was precisely Russian President Putin, who, with his actions

Ukraine, has put an end to years of
existential crisis and meaning of NATO and made a significant
contribution to the revitalization of the Alliance. Not long
ago, an American president called NATO “obsolete” and French
President Emmanuel Macron declared it “brain dead.” Yet never
since the end of the Cold War has the West been more united than
       it is now.

Even some formerly neutral countries are considering joining
NATO. It has undoubtedly been a stroke of luck that someone like
Joe Biden, who embodies the spirit of cooperation with Europe
like no other, is currently the president of the United States.
This historic opportunity should be seized so that the
transatlantic partnership has a more reliable and solid
foundation. However, Europeans should not get their hopes up:
the new Russian threat makes Europe see again in dramatic
fashion how dependent it is on US security guarantees. Reducing
this dependence will continue to be a formidable challenge for
Europe in the years to come. Because even if the United States
were to reassert itself in the Western Alliance, Europe should
not forget the bitter lessons of the Donald Trump years and
aspire to a greater degree of strategic autonomy.
