As a tabby watched the squirming bodies of three kits, she
looked up, seeing another, more red tabby ahead of her. Her
shoulder fur bristled, and she found herself shaking as she
pulled the kits closer to her. All three looked like their
father, excluding the biggest one, who had a few of her own
white markings. The other tabby looked over the kits, and then
       her.
"You know our laws. Only one of them can stay with us, so
choose carefully." The other tabby then turned. "I'm not cruel,
and you can raise them until they reach five moons. By then they
       must learn to fend for--"
The new mother cut her off. She had relaxed by now. "Take
my daughter.. My sons and I will leave. Just please, sister,
Quail, make sure nothing happens to her.." The reddish brown
tabby glanced at the kits again, her fur bristling slightly.
"How am I to raise your kit! We look nothing alike and I
can't give milk. Rose, you should stay here and raise them. Toad
already left! New groups are being made! I need you here--"
Rose narrowed her eyes slightly. "It is getting too
dangerous here Quail. My kits have a better chance of survival
if we leave. I won't be far, just within the fenced zone. Just
       at the edge."
"Why not take all three of the kits then? Wouldn't you
       want all of them?"
"I sense her path is here, just as I sensed Penny and Dew
would leave. Just as I sensed that their father was the right
one. Your group is still small, like the other ones, and you
deserve to have at least one."
Quail could tell she wouldn't win this argument. Rose was
strict about what she sensed, and she was always right.
