Re: Cooperation with the Amerikanisches Reich

The President nervously begin to prepare himself, the display of
air power had made him excited as such powerful contraptions fly
through these skies, along with the words of the pilot who had
told radioed the Führer's delightful attention to diplomacy and
peace. Waiting to disembark he wondered as to who would greet
him here?

Almost as soon as the Turkducken plane taxied to a stop on the
tarmac at Elsbethburg International, and its ramp was lowered,
five immaculate and shining, black luxury Mercedes, with
swastika flags fluttering from their hoods, pulled up at a rapid
pace and screeched to a stop, arrayed in a row.
From one an officer of the SS Leibstandarte -- Obergruppenführer
Hans Richter -- exited, followed by two sturmscharführers in
dress uniform, bearing no obvious weapons excepting their
sidearms. Their black uniforms and helms were in perfect array,
and all were tall and broad of shoulder.
They clapped their boots together and gave Roman salute in
unison: "Sieg heil, Herr President Faraday!"
Richter, not abandoning his stiff bearing, but with a broad
smile, advanced to shake Faraday's hand. "Mein Herr President,
willkomen sie! it is my honor to welcome you to the Reich, on
behalf of the Reichsührers and all der Volk." He gestured to the
cars, and several more doors were opened, with more
SS-Leibstandarte NCOs taking position beside them.
"Now, if you and your esteemed company would accept it, we will
take you to the Reichschancellery with all due haste. The
Reichsührer-General is ..." he paused, a flash of minor
consternation crossing his otherwise stony features; "... is
most eager to make your personal acquaintance, I can say with
absolute certainty."
As the cars sped through the central avenues of Elsbethburg,
column upon column of SS and Wehrmacht troops marched in
impeccable order in the other direction, bright swastika
standards crowned with golden eagles at the head of each, and
the sound of men singing boldly, mixed with marching band music,
echoed from the walls of apartment blocks, offices, and shops.
The architecture was an imposing combination of neoclassical and
a sort of monolithic style, all major buildings seeming to loom
over the streets and nearly to press themselves forward. There
was a notable lack of the sort of garish advertisement common in
some other States of the NCSA, though plenty of small bars and
restaurants announced their presence with boldly-printed signs
in bold, traditional gothic script. A few citizens rode by on
bike or stepped past on foot, their dress in 1940's style, and
all paused to cheer both the soldiers and the cavalcade, waving
hats and, in the former case, attempting to embrace the troops
or shake their hands.

The President was amazed by this extravagant parade in his
honor, truly captivated with the simple yet elegant features of
the capitol, "The perseverance of a revered tradition seems to
enhance and enable this kind of cooperation and glory." he
thought with a smile. Truly he was impressed by this State, as
well as it could only lie a few short miles from his own capitol
let alone share borders with his own war torn State.

Reichsfuhrer-SS Reinhilde Habich nearly kicked open Albrecht
Dietrich zur Linde's door as he was shaving, storming in with
two guard of the SS-Leibstandarte.
The Reichsfuhrer-General looked up patiently, his face partially
covered in shaving cream, and shrugged.
Reinhilde Habich, her hair in perfect braided array, spared no
sympathy: "You know very well whey I'm here, Herr Reichsfurer.
Did you really think I wouldn't notice a foreign plane arriving
at Elsbethburg International, or fail to realize who it's
occupants were? Don't you know this is my job?!"
Albrecht zur Linde looked up briefly before continuing his
shave. "Yes, I did know you would realize it, but I wished to
delay your response as long as possible so as not to offend our
guests"
Habich dismissed her guards and slammed the door. "Did you want
to be photographed with untermenschen, endangered by assassins,
or are you simply reckless?! The Leibstandarte is sworn to
protect you and we take our oath seriously."
Zur Linde sighed:m with a concerted effort not to be influenced
by Habich's beauty. "As a former officer of the Leibstandarte
myself, I will grant you my permission to conduct such security
operations as you desire, with the admonition that you not under
any case alienate the Turkducken envoys."
Reinhilde Habich hesitated but a moment before rendering her
Roman salute, enthusiastic tone at odds with a bitter
expression: "Jawhol, Mein Fuhrer!"

As the convoy of Mercedes arrived in front of the undoubtedly
impressive Reichschallery von Amerikanisches Reich, its golden
eagle-mounted dome surmounting the entire city of Elsbethburg,
they screeched to a halt, Obergruppenführer Hans Richter
clearly surprised and looking from right to left as they were
stopped by a double-line of the SS-Leibstandarte, arms beared.
SS- Obergruppenführer Reinhilde Habich descended the steps
smartly and demanded that each visitor be subject to
"seddanseizure" (search and seizure). Richter breathed heavily
and hesitated for a half a second before saluting.

The President, with a wry smile, thought to himself, "I might've
expected this." The two personal guards for the President made
no perceptible hostile movement but were tense and on edge, but
were calmed, however slightly, by the President's gesture of
disregard to their worries. The President, hands raised in
cooperation, complied with security demands of the Reinhilde.

As the procession approached the imposing dome and pillars of
the Reichschancellery, the SS-Lieibstandarte, led by Reinhilde
Habich, formed up in front, their formation, black uniforms, and
swastika armbands in perfect order.
Obergruppenführer Richter arrayed himself with the rest upon the
arrival of the the foreign party, taking his proper position
albeit with a slight frown of distaste or distress.
Habich strode forward confidently and greeted Faraday and his
adjutants, extending her hand for a shake.
"Ist meine gern geschehen to meet you. However, we do require,
for safety, as a necessary security measure, a search of
yourself and your companions."
She waved to the aligned SS and several soldiers advanced to pat
down President Faraday and his associates quite thoroughly,
though not too invasively.
Reichsführer-SS Habich stepped back: "As long as no weapons are
found, you're cleared to visit the Reichsführer-General. But if
any irregularities are found, you are in the hands of the SS."

After finding no concealed weapons, and encountering no
untermenschen, Reinhilde Habich backed away a few steps, with
her SS-Leibstandarte, and gave a salute.
"Es tut mir leid, Mein Herr President, but it is, as you can
understand, I am sure, my duty and my honor to protect the
Reichsführer-General. Since he ... however unwisely ... changed
the national anthem with a Führerdirektive, I suppose we ought
to play it.
Despite the equivocation, the scene was impressive outside the
Reichschancellery as the SS band took up the Sieg Heil Viktoria,
and every member present sang along proudly, to the cheers of
the surrounding Reich citizens.
During the performance, an officer stepped forward to present
President Faraday with a ring of laurels, and stiffly saluted.
When the formalities were complete, Reinhilde Habich stepped
smartly aside, with a last salute, and said: "Yes, you may all
proceed, and may all the gods be with you. Thank you for your
patience."

"Your security officer is rather charming, in her own stiff and
orderly way." The President spoke to the Reichfürer-General
rather informally, he was becoming entertained by these
performances and is quite intrigued with the culture and history
of this State. "Now," he began, "I am aware of your State's
history, and in my brief time here I have noted several things
of interest. However my ethical concerns of being in this State
are inadequate in not only the economic perspective of what is
to be gained, but in the diplomatic relations between both of
our States is very important to me, and I hope for a personal
friendship between you and I. I would like to think that I have
a good judge of character, and to believe that we are products
of not only our own individuality but of our society. In these
perspectives I extend my friendship to you, and hope for a
better future between both of us." He extends his hand to the
Reichfürer-General, in a genuine way, hoping in his mind for a
better future.

President Faraday was forced to wait only a moment in the
antechamber to the Reichsführer's office whilst the secretary,
Charlotte, professionalism marred by a little anxiety in her
expression, shyly greeted him, polite curtsy replacing the usual
salute. "Es ist meine Ehre, Herr President. Just one moment,
please." She quickly recovered herself activated the intercom on
her desk:
"Entschuldigen Sie mich, bitte, Mein Führer, but Herr President
Faraday is ready to see you."
"Danke, Charlotte; please let him in at once."
The timid secretary bowed her head slightly as she opened the
office door and announced: "His Excellency, President Faraday of
the Confederacy of Turkducken, Mein Führer." Just as quickly,
but gently, she closed it behind the foreigner.
Albrecht zur Linde layed a cigarette in the ashtray and his desk
as he stood up with a broad smile, clasping Faraday's hands in a
firm shake. After he listened patiently to the president,
tilting his head, blue eyes glinting with curiosity, he smiled
again, not at all disturbed by his informal manner.
He moved to a small bar at the side of the oak-paneled room --
not dissimilar to his study, though more bare and sterile
lacking the personal touches, and with the broad, banner-flanked
windows opening Southeast upon the bay rather than the street --
and opened a bottle of schnapps.
"Please, please, sit! Make yourself at home." He motioned to a
large, heavily padded carved chair. "Can I offer you a drink?
Zigarette?" Zur Linde waved his hand a little dismissively, but
with an affectionate air: "Charlotte, bless her, says it's a
poor example to the children of the Reich, but I can't help but
think, well, our grandparents all smoked -- most of them at
least -- and there was no epidemic of children smoking then,
ja?" He laughed. "Besides, it is one of our land's blessings,
tobacco, and I would feel remiss."
***
"First of all, I'm glad you didn't find Reichsführer Habich's --
How do you say? Protectiveness? -- too offensive. I was worried
she would put you off and, well, she was less charming with me,
if it's any consolation."
Zur Linde chuckled as he resumed his cigarette and sipped his
glass of schnapps. "But in general she is much more polite than
that;" he shrugged; "as much as duty allows." He frowned in mock
seriousness, and lowered his voice to a stage whisper. "Just be
sure not to call her 'security chief'; she is the overall
commander of the entire SS, and, I would say, dislikes being
underestimated. Besides, she's probably listening to us right
now."
The Reichsführer coughed softly, put down his drink, and
extinguished his cigarette, clapping his hands lightly. "Now!
For your proposals: That was very ... diplomatically phrased."
He bowed his head very slightly in respect. "I think I know what
you are thinking. We are hated by much of the world, of course,
because of our flag, and our songs, and our uniforms. But we are
not the Third Reich. It has been two generations since then ...
three if you count the youngest citizens ... and still we
learned our lessons well."
"I suppose people think because of these symbols that we, oh,
desire world conquest and commit war crimes and atrocities. I
don't speak to the veracity of any of that historically, not
being an historian, but that is not what they mean to me or der
Volk. No, no, they are about a unity, a strength in unity, and a
national pride that other nations have never been able to
achieve. All of my policies -- our policies -- are about making
sure that every citizen feels a sense of belonging to the
Volksgemeinschaft: the national community, and has a place in
it."
"Others say, even if they do not admit it openly: 'everyone for
themselves'. And if they are unfortunate, a social death for
them. We say, we are one people; one nation; one culture; and if
any member of the nation fails, it is because we have failed
them."
Zur Linde slumped his shoulders, smiling apologetically, and
took another sip of his schnapps.
"Well, I do go on, and must beg your forgiveness, but I hope you
can understand the frustration that these misconceptions cause
me. And I hope that is enough to convince you that the People of
the Reich are worthy friends of your own."
