       Background for The Commonwealth of Hirilia

       The people of Hirilia are largely individualistically minded and
       isolationist. The Commonwealth was originally carved out as a
       corporate bordello for those corporations involved in
       agriculture, mining, the automotive industry and the lumber
       industry. However, with increasing rights that the people of
       Hirilia found being encroached upon, this led to the razing of
       New Spokane, the former capitol. The new nation state has a
       focus on its environment as well as its capitalist,
       anti-monopolistic economy. Comprising of the land of the former
       Palouse, Eastern Washington, the Idaho Panhandle  and parts of
       the Rockie Mountains this vast and ragged landscape makes the
       nation difficult to govern from its capital of Byker Hill
       located in Eastern Washington. This rough landscape makes
       self-reliance a necessity, propagating the mass private holding
       of fire arms. The geography in combination with the wide use of
       personal fire arms also makes military invasion by another
       nation state a bit of a ****.
       Due to the nation being completely land-locked it has no use for
       a navy but, does enforce mandatory conscription upon the age of
       18 and relies on the citizen's knowledge the region's wilderness
       and the extensive tunnel systems throughout the nation as an
       advantage for its military. Most of the military compromises of
       tanks and infantry to the west as well as anti-aircraft sites
       and numerous subterranean bases to the east. However, because
       the citizens are largely isolationists as is the governmental
       body the only acquisition of land would be through the proper
       routes.
       The economy is largely driven by mining, agriculture, and
       tourism replacing lumber as one of the top three businesses. The
       Commonwealth of Hirilia has cut back on the lumber industry as
       more tourists come to view the vasts forests of the region.
       Agriculture centers around the former Palouse and the western
       Idaho panhandle with mining being further to the east and being
       the main source of expansion, as prospectors find deep veins of
       gold, silver, lead, and copper and tungsten. The Commonwealth
       will be seeking to open trade with its neighbor Evergreen
       Columbia to the west.
