The Governor of Abia State Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has advocated the
engagement of the National Youth Service Corps to drive the
Federal Government’s policy on agricultural rejuvenation.
He was speaking today, when the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier
General Suleman Kazaure, paid him a courtesy visit at the
Government House, Umuahia.
He pointed out that one of the ways to maximize the country’s
potentials in agriculture was to channel the energy of the
youths towards the sector.
Governor Ikpeazu averred that the level of education of Corps
members would make them have better understanding of issues and
practices in agriculture.
The Governor, who spoke of the state’s Senatorial multi-skills
centre in Aba, with more to come on stream in other Senatorial
zones, assured that the state government would give Corps
members opportunity to learn vocational skills in the centres.
He lauded the contributions of the NYSC to national unity and
development and, especially, its role in the successful conduct
of the 2015 general elections.
Ikpeazu also used the occasion to preach peace and unity among
Nigerians.
“We should reflect on those things that unite us rather than
what divides us,” he said.
He assured that the state government would intervene in the
various challenges confronting the NYSC Scheme in the state.
Earlier, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Suleman
Kazaure had enumerated pressing needs of the Scheme in the state
to include control of erosion problem, total renovation of
female hostels and provision of additional boreholes in the
orientation camp as well as payment of state subvention to the
NYSC State Secretariat.
Kazaure, however, acknowledged the renovation works already
carried out in the camp and the planned renovation of the State
Coordinator’s residence.
He thanked the state government for its support to the NYSC
while also calling for the strengthening of the existing cordial
relationship between them.
