2016

It really hasn't been that great a year for movies, has it? I
loved The Neon Demon, but outside of that, there hasn't really
been that much to get excited about.Neon Demon doesn't even feel
like it came out this year. It already feels like a movie that
has just kind of been around forever. Arrival started strong and
then just kind of fizzled out somewhere on the way to the end.
Green Room felt like a waste of potential. High Rise was very
good, and is probably only to continue to grow in relevance over
the years. I can already barely remember Hell or High Water.
This time last year there was a new Tarantino movie (on 70mm!)
to get excited about. The year before there was Inherent Vice.
The year before that was The Wolf of Wall Street. The year
before that, there was The Master AND Django Unchained. I guess
a less exciting year was bound to happen eventually.
Or maybe I'm just choking on my own pretension.

Did you enjoy Hunt for the Wilderpeople? I enjoyed Hunt for the

I wasn't as enamored with <b><i>High Rise</i></b> as I'd hoped
I'd be.
Both <i><b>Kill List</b></i> and <i><b>A Field in
England</i></b> are contemporary favorites of mine where
Wheatley proves he understands the value in tonal dynamism, or,
more fitting, a balanced sense of unbalance. Unnerving quiet,
playful-yet-cutting banter, and bursts of delirious absurdity--
there's never a moment in those films where I was left groaning,
<i>"This is too much..."</i>
Sadly, I can't say the same for <i><b>High Rise</b></i>. It's a
gorgeous film. It's a daring film. It's an impressive film. But
it's not an enjoyable film. It's not a consistent film. It's not
a film that showcases dynamism so much as one that showcases
negligence on the editing floor.
That said, I've only seen it twice... so maybe the third time's
the charm?
