Squad 1: The Squad of Secrets

Kumi sits on the steps outside the mist's academy, looking as
far as she could through the fog. She hadn't seen it shift any
differently than normal since she sat there. To pass the time,
it became a sort of training for her senses. It was ruined
everytime she'd notice a shift and look around just to notice a
bird. She rests her chin on her fist and extends out her leg to
get comfortable while still bending the left to lay the sole of
her shoes on the floor.
Her vision turns to the sky completely. She lets it start to
wander. She saw the listings for the squads.. She was surprised
that many of them became genin..
except maybe..... no, them too.

Maiku starts to push on the academy door from the inside,
peeking through it. His vision shifts down to Kumi sitting on
the porch with her head up. He kept looking at her, surprised he
found her so quickly.
He'd tried talking to her through the time they were close in
class. Her answers were so short and monotone, he'd become to
feel disarmed in her presence. He takes a quick breath in and
pushes the door forward more to fully reveal himself. The creak
would give him away before he even spoke. Even when he did, it
was in a low personal tone.
"Oh, you're here already.. Did you.."
He looks back inside, then back and Kumi, then back again, and
repeat. His voice picked up this time that he spoke. Adding some
life to it.
"Did you notice the list?"
'Something relevant to the both of them, yeah. That's a good
start.' Is what he thought.

With her head already up, Kumi tilts her vision over to Maiku as
he appeared. She blinks a couple times, isolating his form after
staring off into blank mist for so long. She was happy for
another person for that bit at least. She nods to his inquiry,
catching his meaning.
"It's just us."
Her eyes move over to the pathway leading up to the academy
again.
"I was waiting for our sensei. I thought he could explain."
Her head comes down now to a normal level, but her eyes shift
back over to Maiku.
"Unless.. you know why?"

Maiku's eyelids flare and his hands suddenly come up to block
his person. He waves them in the air with a chuckle running off
his tongue, shaking his head all the while.
"No, no, I don't know anything. I'm just as clueless as you
are!"
His voice comes to an abrupt stop, feeling he may have ruined
the conversation already by trying to be too personable to her
response. Maybe she didn't like the 'adjective' clueless put on
her.. He rubs the back of his head and chuckles again.
"I mean.. I asked Roshi sensei and he didn't have any
explanation either sooo.."
He steps outside completely now and lets the door close. He
leans against it and looks to Kumi, slipping his hands into his
pockets.
"It's kind of weird.. There were more than enough kids to just
finish the squad. They weren't ALL terrible.

She takes in his words, and feels he didn't know just how deeply
they differed on those feelings. She looks at him and gives him
and slight head tilt, showing she was listening. She turns away,
expecting now to be made to wait much longer since at least
Maiku made it here. Back to waiting for their sensei it was.

"Actually.. they were."
One step after another, the children would hear the mist
disturbed in the area. It didn't come from straight ahead, but
instead, right above them. If they looked up, the edge of the
awning surroundin g the door had a shinobi balancing on top of
it. He was squatted down low with his eyes shut but still
focused on the two.
He raises a single hand, greeting them with his open palm and a
light smile.
"Hello you two. Lovely day for meetings."
His smile got a little bigger, and the mist around them was
somewhat thinner.

Kumi's eyes look wide the way she swings her head to the sudden
arrival. The face was unfamiliar, but the headband was just like
everyone else's in the village. She blinks twice and doesn't
need to ponder long to figure where he came from.
"I thought the mist was a little thicker around the door."
A normal person might've tripped down the stairs. Lucky this guy
knew who he was dealing with.
"Who.. are we meeting exactly?"

Maiku would've stumbled back out of surprise if his back weren't
already up against the academy wall. After all his training, he
thought he'd be more alert, but for some reason his guard was
low. He just timed the appearance badly, in Maiku's opinion.
"You're.."
He didn't know who the guy was, but looking at the uniform, he'd
seen it before. Though he never asked about it. At least the guy
wasn't some random outsider. He now waited for the man to fill
in the blank of his query.

He lowers his hand and starts to commit the kids to memory.
Although it still appeared as if he didn't even move his
eyelids. He looks to Maiku, nodding his head slightly, feeling
he may have caught on.
"Yup. I'll be watching over you two from today."
He extends his hand down to them to initiate a handshake. There
was 10 feet of distance between them, but he imagined they'd
come shake his hand somehow. His smile returned.
"San Kotomo. Nice to meet you two."

Kumi rose from her seat, standing tall and turning up to San.
She noticed his intent with his hand but she everything was
moving faster than she'd expect. He sounded so confident, but
here these two were without a clue.
"Uhm, yes, but.."
She looks to Maiku and then back to San.
"I thought squads of 3 genin were the standard.. Is it really
just us?"
