Recently my friend attended a talk by a software developer & he
was told that all companies who registered for GST must use only
accounting software approved by KASTAM.
Is this correct?

Taken from the GST Software Guide
As a GST registrant, it is compulsory for me to use the
accounting software/ P.O.S that is listed in GST PORTAL?
GST registrant are recommend to use the verified software that
have pass the testing and evaluation session, and also had
achieve a standard of Malaysia’s GST requirements based on the
industry of businesses. This because the GST registrant
possibilities of an errors on making declaration to RMCD will be
lower, rather than usage of others accounting software that not
have been verified by RMCD.

Selvam is correct to use the word "recommended".
Just for discussion's sake ...there will be no further
accreditation exercise by Kastam.
If so, then ...all developers cannot upgrade their software
since, not only is the software accredited, but the version as
well.
There will also be new software been introduced.
Unless Kastam create a board that will continuously provide
accreditation, such talk as "MUST USE ONLY ACCREDITED/APPROVED"
software does not make sense.
As a comparison, the Human Resource ministry maintains a board
that registers and approves payroll software. In this case, then
YES ...you must buy only approved payroll software.
Will be glad to hear other views.

I wish to share my opinion
I suggest to use recommended software only as recommended must
generate
GST03
GAF
TAP Import File
My friend's company in Taiping is using a local software which
is not recommended by KASTAM. So much problem with GST03 & no
GAF & no TAP File until today & they have no one to complain to
If they used a recommended software, they can complain to KASTAM
