Please Help Me Save MuscleTalk
DIR By: Simon

I've posted in another thread so I'll keep this short but I want
to be clear and to the point for anyone who might be able to
speak to Jason or help me here. I have the time and ability to
save MT forum.
I started TMuscle from scratch, have run it since, I have a
dedicated server that can absorb the load of the MuscleTalk
forum and I can devote the time needed to get things back
running again.
Forums don't make money like they used to so it's not about
that. I just want to save the community because I know how
gutted I'd be if this happened to TMuscle. I also run UGM and
while it's not really active any more I shall continue to keep
it going because it's the right thing to do. Without wanting to
appear arrogant I might be the only person, at least in the UK,
who has both the knowhow and desire to save the site, so if I
can get any support to do so that would be brilliant.
I'm just in disbelief that such a large forum that was still
active could be removed the way it has but it won't be too late.
There will be a backup somewhere and that is all I need to get
things running again and save 5 million posts and a vast amount
of information and time people have put into it.
I've reached out to James, am very keen to speak to Jason. If
you want to support me in what I'm trying to do here please post
or even if you want to quiz me on anything about why I want to
save it please do so as I have nothing to hide.

Having been around for about 18 years of the forums 19 year
history, nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see MT
live. But I respect that it is Jason and James's "baby", and I
know Jason didn't take the decision to close the forum lightly.
Muscletalk is part of a brand that is continuing to trade, I
just don't how Jason could allow the forum to continue without
having control over it, even it was possible.

This isn't as straightforward as everyone seems to think. Not
least the number of hours I have already spent converting MT to
a different type of site and revenue model.
I know some people think I'm mad but there were many interwoven
reasons this has happened.
Not that this really matters but a server is not a server. As
far as I can see that server is not a Windows server. There is
also a SQL license to consider. The fact that the forum software
is no longer being supported and there are some license issues
is also something major.
I've been in this game a lot of years and these decisions came
about over months of thinking.
Stress was also a major part of it and that seems to not be
disappearing as I'd like ;)

Hi Jason,
Thanks for replying. Didn't realise you were on here, that's
handy.
I don't doubt there would be obstacles in terms of getting it
back online but I'm sure I could get it done. If the previous
forum software is no longer supported then I will be able to
create a custom importer to get the content into a different
type of software that is such as vBulletin, XenForo or IPB.
That also takes care of the SQL/license.
The most important thing IMO is saving the content and getting
that back online even if it means the design isn't identical.
As far as stress I'd be happy to take care of everything so you
wouldn't have to worry about anything.
The above would take a little time, not helped by me going away
for a week soon but I think within a few weeks I could get it
converted and back online.

Not for me it isn't. Whatever I say now I just look like a
wanker because I won't save MT.
Sorry, but it is not possible. There are soooo many factors that
are interwoven and people don't know all of the facts. There are
legal aspects including GDPR - I couldn't just hand over the
database to someone else even if i wanted to. It wouldn't live
under its current name so it would be riddled with problems.
I wanted to be a nice guy and get involved with everyone here
even though it was hard seeing MT go. All the stress just seems
to be coming back (not that it had time to fully reduce yet). I
know people have good intentions but it just is not going to
happen. Solving individual problems without knowing the whole
picture is just not going to help.
So, for now anyway, I'm going to take time out. I wish you all
well and hope you have fun here.
