H0M3R's Strength Journal
By: H0M3R Date: June 3, 2019, 4:49 am
---------------------------------------------------------
How do all! Thought I'd continue my journal here as the
community seems pretty nice so far, I'll try not to get banned
from this one.
Story so far:
33yrs old, 6ft 1", ~88kg. Mechanical Engineer. Married, 2 kids
(7 and 3), don't get much time to fit any other hobbies in but
gym is a must for me, as its my only escape from life and I want
to get strong AF lol.
I train primarily for strength in my garage on Tues/Wed/Fri, and
a Saturday morning at a local gym while my son does MMA class in
the same building. I also train on Thurs at the same gym where I
do some light cardio, conditioning work and maybe some isolation
work if I can fit it in. Go MTBing when I can but usually only
once a month or so. Inbetween strength cycles though I do short
blocks of hypertrophy work just to give my joints and tendons a
rest.
Current PB's:
Squat - 175kg
Bench - 125kg
Deadlift - 210kg
Strict OHP - 85kg
Goals:
Would like to get the elusive 4 plate squat and 5 plate deadlift
before the end of this year, a 2 plate OHP and a 3 plate bench
would be nice but that will be next year. Also determined to
enter a PL comp, I have missed the dates for local qualifiers
this year so next Feb is my plan with the GPC, although there is
a charity push/pull meet this December in Birmingham that I've
got my eye on. I don't want to win anything or break any records
but I want to just have the experience, also figured as I love
training for strength I might as well have something to aim for
and keep myself motivated.
Tend to often fall back onto Wendlers 531 format as I love its
simplicity, although I'm always looking at other strength
programs to keep it interesting. I'm currently on a hypertrophy
block although will be back on strength soon, didn't start my
journal until this week as last weekend I was away camping, so
only trained the Tues/Wed.
Thanks for reading!

But I love 531 lol!
I'm only going to use 531 for maintenance phases now, when I'm
not pushing for big gains or having a break between strength
cycles. Gonna be sticking with some high volume programs for my
strength cycles.

I think 531 is a good starting point but it needs to be modified
once you get to a certain point as the volume is too low once
your get beyond the initial stages of being an intermediate
lifter. The principles and wave loading pattern can be useful
but you need much more assistance than the base program on it's
own.
