       Anyone ever had an angiogram?

Having an angiogram on August 15th as part a of heart check now
that I have hit the big 50 and a family history of heart disease
on both sides, with my father having a triple bypass in his late
40's and my Mum has had a few stents, although neither ever
smoked, or drank or were overweight and lead a fairly active
lifestyle. I started getting a tightness in the centre of chest
a few months ago during cardio sessions, so went to see a
cardiologist and had an ECG and echocardiogram which were both
were ok thankfully, but the angiogram is the gold standard as
far as the cardiologist is concerned and he recommended it to
fully check the heart. I am a little concerned as it can go
badly for a small unlucky few, with a stroke, heart attack,
damage an artery, kidney damage from the dye as possible things
that can go wrong, but I guess those low risk of those is better
than dropping dead dead during a heavy cardio session on the
       stairmaster :)
Anyone ever had one?. How long before they were back in heavy
       training after it?

My husband had one last week. Nothing to worry about. It's not
invasive that it stops you getting on with life as normal. No
worse than having an X-ray. The only thing he mentioned which he
was warned about is, the first fluid they put in to flush the
veins feels cold and then the dye feels hot when it goes in and
your arse will feel like it's on fire!!

Thanks Kitty. That sounds wonderful :o
Yeah, my father mentioned it can feel very hot when the dye goes
in alright. I hope they go in via the radial artery, as that
seems to result in less chance of complications. I heard you are
supposed to avoid anything too physical for a week or so whilst
the artery heals that the catheter goes in through. Fingers
crossed no stents needed. I hope your husbands was all clear
       too!!

My husband didn't stop training. Wasn't advised to. His
condition doesn't require surgery, will need a review in 3
years. They did comment on some calcification in the blood so we
just need to pay attention to his diet. Blood pressure
medication being increased!! Good luck with yours, will try
check in asap after to see how you got on :-)

Hi Kitty. Glad your husband did not require surgery. Had my
angio last Saturday. The whole procedure went quite smoothly.
Did not feel any burning sensation with the dye, but I guess
everyone's body reacts differently too it. You can kind of feel
the catheter in your arm and your heart, a funny kind of
sensation, but not painful. Cardiologist found what he called a
bit of plaque on the arteries, but nothing that needs stenting
or bypass etc..., and just recommended that I start on statins
at 20mg a day to try and prevent or slow any further plaque
build up. So on the whole, not to bad thankfully!!
