Help me choose
By: ANIMAL Date: January 15, 2020, 2:27 pm

It’s my birthday next month and my home gym still needs a few
things. So I submitted my list to the proper authorities.
Unfortunately the boss says I need to choose one. I’ve listed
the pros of each below
Spotter arms: Would make pressing a lot safer. Especially maxing
(although I don’t really do much maxing anymore
cast iron plates: my bumpers are huge, I can’t fit anymore on
the bar and I only have 195kgs. So I could start my cast iron
plate collection. Much thinner. I’ve even reinforced the
platform in anticipation.
Trap bar. The issues I have with my knees, a trap bar could help
me get more volume in without the stress of squats as it’s very
quad dominant
Safety Squat Bar. Great piece of kit which I’ve missed since
leaving a commercial gym
I have no cardio element in the dungeon. Heavy bag is one of
favourites for raising heart rate, would be a welcome addition.
I would literally be happy with any of them. What should I
choose?

Whatever you feel you can cover with an improvisation or an
alternative I would put on the back burner, whatever you cannot
I would move up the order. So weights would be something I would
look at if you are now maxing your loads as there is noting you
can do to fix that or work around that. Spotters arms I would
imagine a man of your ingenuity could, if you had to, find a fix
for. Trap or SSB might also move up the list, which ever you
could get the most versatility from going ahead of the other...
those are my first thoughts

The way I see it many of those things only perform a limited
function. The plates are useful in almost every function.
Less sexy but I’d go with plates.
Also if you are going to prioritise weight loss again soon it
might be wiser to get a heavy bag instead, as you would use that
frequently, and in a weight loss phase you are unlikely to need
the cast plates!

Trap bar, awesome bit of kit and as Nails has shown, very
versatile.

This would be my preference as well. Obviously following a
birthday BJ but couldn’t see that on the list.

Cheers guys. Plates it is. I’ve maxed out the home gym plates
doing block pulls so they are the smart option.
Little brucie bonus today won £100 worth of ovation vouchers
from work which will pay for a decent heavy bag. So that’s
cardio sorted in the dungeon (might see if I can get one of
those combo punch bag/pull-up bar things as I’m bound to do my
first pull-up any month now!
So trap bar will be next. Hopefully a cheapo second hand one
pops up on gumtree soon.
Billy .. I’ll have to check if a BJ is within budget. Don’t know
what they go for these days? Do they sell them on amazon?
“ALEXA, show me locations and prices of BJ’s near me”

Watch out googling local BJ or you might end up being chucked
around by a beefy man in a gi.

True. I much prefer no gi (if I’m being honest, sumo would be my
thing, with the belly’s touching and the force feeding and
grunting .. much more my style !)
