Car insurance problems
By: doc Date: January 2, 2020, 2:50 pm

Ok so signed up with a new car insurer from compare the market ,
obviously went with the cheapest for what I needed , came out at
£488 no problems
week later ( today ) I notice than another £120 has been taken
out of my account . Rang the insurer and asked what this was
and they say they mailed me a week ago ( it was in my junk
folder)
stating that they didn't think i had a driveway so they have
changed my car to being on the road and this ended up with a new
premium of £544
544 - 488 = 56 but somehow they have calculated this to be £120
extra
the mail wasn't seven working days (christmas day, boxing day,new
yr day etc) , didn't have a read receipt , they didn't even
bother to ring me or send me a mail through the post .
They have said if i can send a photo of the drive ( which I
have done) they will refund the money but its really pi55ed me
off that they would treat a new customer this way , can't
imagine they would help me out if ever there was a claim.
They have also said there is a £60 cancelation fee , now for the
£120 I am going to raise a dispute with the bank as they
shouldn't let someone go into my bank and take money out
unauthorised.
I shouldn't have to cancel based on them moving the goalposts
with them changing my quote after its been agreed , so my
question is do I have to legally pay a cancelation fee for this
? are they not themselves terminating the original contract ?
who would I contact to get this sorted ? I can see many
companies using these same tactics in future.

There should be some sort of ombudsman isn't there? If you
bought it online you should also have a cancellation window too,
no? I thought there was a grace period for online sales of such
things. Don't see why they have the right to change your
policy.... if you've misinformed them and your car got stolen
and you have no drive, they simply void your insurance and don't
pay out due to you not telling them. No idea why they get to
assume you've misinformed them and to raise your premium without
notice.
Mine 'auto-renewed' without have received any notification the
other year (email may have gone to junk but got no paper copy
either) and I got the whole policy rescheduled at the online
rate rather than the 'automatic renewal rate' (that is always
more than the year before) without any hassle or debate
whatsoever so your lot certainly sound like charletons

Financial Services (Distance Marketing Regulation 2004)
stipulates a minimum 14 day cancellation period for online
insurance sales... if your cover has started they can deduct any
covered days and any admin fees from any credited funds. So just
cancel it and get someone you can trust even if it's a couple of
quid more

My previous insurer ( morethan) also took money without any
paperwork or renewal fee so cancelled and as it was within 2
weeks they issued a full refund - the 2 days they insured me (
cost about £4) which was a decent experience.
RCIB dont have a cooldown period apparently , my logic is to
kick off with the bank and get them to retrieve the money and
get the insurer to terminate the contract as its not what was
agreed or what i paid for , but I would be happy to get away
from them even though its nothing but hassle.
cheers DV I will quote theFinancial Services (Distance Marketing
Regulation 2004) and see what they say .
Just the absolute cheek of changing my quote without even
ringing me and saying can you point out where your driveways is
before taking the money , so avoid RCIB.

Just read, there is a 14 day cooling off period but this incurs
a £60 cancelation fee , after 14 days you get a much smaller
percentage refund month on month , if you cancel after 6 months
you get 15% of the payment back - £60 which for most people will
be zero.
wonder if they actually run there business on coming in on
compare sites with the smallest quotes, then doing addons and
changes without notice and then doing cancellations, money for
nothing! absolutely disgusting.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, car insurance is just
legalised fraud.
Every purchase has a 14 day cooling off period, which is a
consumer right. I'd definitely go down the route of trying to
get your bank to retrieve the money, I think Barclays are pretty
good for this.

i have just received a reply from the insurer
Refereed over to the underwriters and they have not accepted I
have a driveway as more than one person from the building can
park there.
RCIB is a scam company

Sounds horrible mate.
I am always dubious about compare the market and similar. They
are paid to advertise those companies obviously. I’ve almost
made a few jumps in the past but by googling reviews and hearing
stories from poor folks like you i avoided the pain. I tend to
stick with more well known established companies and grill them
for better rates.
Hope you get your money back mate.

I've usually still gone with the cheapest reputable (oxymoron
alert) company rather than the outright cheapest as there is
usually small print etc involved. Or i check reviews. For the
kast 3 years or so my current insurer has always top of the list
or close so ive stuck with them as they've done me well... but
I've taken the compare quote not the renewal quote

more than just me having problems, sounds like this is the way
they do business.
HTML https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/rightchoice.com
I will cancel within the 14 days , have to bite the bullet and
take a loss and chase it up with the ombudsman later . If i
stay I risk getting no claims held back from them, fictitious
claims passed to the new insurers etc.
