Any PC Gamers or Builders on here?

Thought it would be worth a shot asking on here..
My Son has just upgraded his Graphics card from a GTX 1050ti,
       to a 1070ti, this one -
  HTML https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-GTX-1070-Ti-ARMOR-8G/Specification
Fitting the thing wasn't quite as straightforward as I was
hoping, in that the damned thing was just too big! I managed to
get it in (lengthways) by literally cutting part of the case
away, however this still means he is unable to put the side of
the case back on, the power cables protrude just slightly.
       Now, my question is..
Are case sizes standardised? Is there a particular size I could
buy and guarantee a fit? Or is it a case of measuring and
checking individual case specs? ...and if so, where do I measure
from? Side panel to side panel? From the part the motherboard is
mounted to? From the motherboard?....see my confusion?
       Any help greatly appreciated :)

Hi mate. I’ve built some rigs in the past but not had this
issue. I know the cases aren’t standardised at all. The only
standard is for what size mobo they hold.
If you are in the market for a new case I would google some
builds that have your motherboard and graphics card, or at least
a graphics card that is similar dimensions.. That way you will
know it fits when you order a good deal online from new egg or
       something.
There are loads of websites where people show off their builds
so shouldn’t be too hard to locate a build similar to yours with
       an appropriate sized case.
       Hope that helps.

       Ah thanks!
That's a pain, I was hoping you'd say "As long as you buy an XXX
       size, you'll be fine.
He is happily running it with the side off for now, but I can't
see that lasting. I wanted to just dremel a slot into the side
panel, but I am sure that's not ideal either.
What a pain in the neck.

I’ve seen some pretty inventive builds in the past. One that
comes to mind was a fella that built his tower out of LEGO lol.
Obviously when you have to consider air volume and flow then a
       bought case would be easier.
       Good luck.
