Dr Z, once you’re completely fat adapted (which is why you
should look to lower protein somewhat imo), you can have up to
100g of carbs and still produce ketones. It will not kick you
out. This helps me greatly when fuelling a workout(although I
prefer the backloading approach of carbs postwo)
There is a difference between a low carb diet and a keto diet.
Do you test for ketones? Keto Meter or strips?

I have strips, and a breathalyser, I used to check early on, but
got bored with it as there were always Ketones present.
As I understand the jury is out on Protein kicking you out of
Ketosis? Tony Barnes posted this when we discussing it in my
post.

Like I said, I was monitoring Ketones early on, and even with my
protein high there were ketones present, including on day when
my protein was WAY too high, I was anxiously measuring for the
next few days worried I was going to stop producing ketones, but
they nothing seemed to change.
Although to be honest, Ketosis wasn't particularly high on my
priorities, I chose keto firstly for the blood sugar thing, and
secondly because I want to drop weight, and I know from
experience the more carbs I eat, the more I crave, leading to
overeating. Better to just cut them out.

it’s not that protein will kick you out, you’d have to eat an
aweful lot for glucogenesiss to have an effect (that’s why Dave
palumbos diet is great for bodybuilders) .. its more that you
can enjoy ‘more’ carbs (once a week naan and spuds with your
curry without worrying too much).
That study is relating to satiety.. and of course more protein
means more satiety!
You need to have these days off every week or 2 IMO for mental
health more then anything. Have a curry but a few days of higher
fat will help mitigate that.

Good on you mate for making the change.
It frustrates me too watching people poison themselves slowly,
but then many of us in the bbing community are doing much the
same with some 'supplements'!
I suppose the thing I hate the most is listening to people lie
to themselves. Makes then sound weak.

Never been a much of a chef, but this Keto thing has both myself
and the wife looking around at various recipes. We've got bread
pretty sussed now. Its not that either of us are really fussed
about bread 99% of the time, but I do kind of see Marmite on
Toast as a comfort food, so its great for that occasionally,
also when pushed for time its great to be able to throw a
sandwich together and feel like a normal person!
However, this mornings effort has to be the weirdest thing I've
ever tried. I don't usually eat breakfast cereals anyway, but I
saw this recipe for Cinnamon Crunch cereal made out of .....
PORK SCRATCHINGS!! it was so bizarre I had to try it.
Basically you make a Caramel using Butter, Sweetener
(Erythritol) and Double cream, then coat your Pork Scratchings
in it, sprinkle with cinnamon, then refrigerate.
You'd expect it to be disgusting, but somehow it just works, all
that remains of the Pork scratching flavour is the saltiness,
and that adds to the "salted caramel" taste,
I expected the whole lot to go in the bin, but I ended up having
it for breakfast, just as they were, no milk obviously.
Probably won't be having it again for breakfast, I don't think,
as I said I am not really a cereal eater, plus I am trying to
keep the sweeteners to a minimum, but I can see how these might
make a nice sweet snack, bit like toffee popcorn.

That's certainly one of the the more 'out there' recipes I've
heard of

Yeah, I only really tried it because it sounded so bizarre, I'd
love to know who came up with the idea. That said I know a lot
of recipes use crushed pork scratchings as breadcrumbs, and that
works too.

Pork scratching's are the keto snack of kings lol.
That cinnamon crunch things sounds bizarre, for breakfast
anyway, although not a bad idea for a pudding.

Wow, I am not very good at this Journal thing.
Been a bit busy with other things, but tried to peer on MT Lives
when I can. I have to say I am really pleased with how things
are going, in the respect that us Mods can afford to not be
around for long periods of time without the place going to pot!
(unless I've missed something and the rest of them have been run
off their feet?)
Yesterday was three months to the day since my Diabetes
diagnoses, so Today is 3 months to the day that I started
dieting. When I was told I would be reviewed in 3 months time,
I had an immediate target of 18st in my mind. I didn't mention
it to a lot of people as I know how tedious it can be to hear
the fat lazy looking bloke telling you how he is going to make
such efforts, but having dumped 6-7 stone over 6 months at
around 25 years old, I knew I could do it, especially with the
motivation I'd been dealt.
So anyway, Actual weight loss = 4 stone, 13lbs! I considered
fasting today just to get that last damned pound off, but that
would be silly, I am happy enough with this progress.
Strength has suffered a little, but I think that is more about
fuelling than anything else.
Phase two WAS to back off a little, and drop to 16 stone more
slowly, by Xmas, but I honestly feel I could carry on and do
that in my sleep over another month or so. I think my days of
being a big lump are (or at least, should be) over now, so I may
drop a little further, to, say, 14 stone and then see how I look
and feel then. I'd love to say its all been really hard work,
and my determination has carried me through, but in reality its
been a breeze! I don't feel remotely deprived, hungry or
exhausted by workouts :D
I don't get the results of my blood tests till 30th July now, so
I think those might influence what I do next, but reading
between the lines I think I have done OK. The GP was chomping at
the bit to make me take a Statin, and I am sure if my
Cholesterol and Triglycerides hadn't improved, she'd be calling
me in, but instead she just referred me to the Diabetic team.
So yeah, its going well [emoji108]

Awesome news, mate. And well done. No doubt the ease and success
(which tend to go hand in hand) is down to just basic common
sense and not treating your diet as some kind of punishment.
Still enjoying what you do and what you eat makes a huge
difference, as does the goal being more life and death I guess.
