Dr Z's Blog
By: Dr Z Date: May 30, 2019, 1:23 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
This isn't really a Journal, its more of a blog. My training has
been turned on it's head by my recent Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis.
I am no longer interested in lifting heavy weights in any
respect other than to preserve as much lean mass as possible
while I crash diet as much bulk away as possible, as every case
of T2D I have seen tends to involve drastic weight loss.
On diagnosis (17th April) I was 23 stone, Today I am 20 stone
1lb, so progress is being made.
Currently training weights in the Garden 3-4 days a week, plus a
little Cardio (30-45 mins a day, also at home)
Diet strategy has been Keto, High Protein Keto at that, and to
be honest I am really enjoying it. Its not that I believe Keto
fairies magically take the fat away or anything like that, its
just easy to stick to and I never, ever feel hungry.
So yeah, this will be more random musings, maybe a bit of
training and progress detail, but more of a place for me to
record my thoughts about this and that.

I’m not diabetic but I live a low carb high fat lifestyle and
listen to a shedload of podcasts on the subject.
When I read the first part I was going to suggest a keto diet,
good to see you’re already headed that way. I listened to many
people talking about reversing type 2 diabetes with it but also
some who manage it really well with keto and minimal (some pill
beginning with an M?) metaforman or summit?
Really interested to read your progress on this Dr Z

Oh and I lost 3.5 stone when I first went on this diet/lifestyle
and absolutely will not be going off it. Been on it 2 years and
and love it

Yep, love the keto diet though all the red meat I was consuming
put my cholesterol through the roof, so have cut back on the red
and consume mostly white meat now.

I would bet money your Type 2 will be gone in 6 months with the
changes you’ve made
I basically live 5 days a week as a pure carnivore and have
weekends off where I can enjoy some family type foods - carbs. I
always feel a lot worse on a Monday after the sugar but I feel
the best I ever have eating this way and it’s sustainable for
me.
Just watch the higher protein keto as protein converts.. You get
more of the hormonal, physiological benefits when fat is at 80%

Thats the other rapidly becoming debatable part as well AW. The
thinking on cholesterol is very much changing from what I’m
listening to. Low carb reducing inflammation and the way
cholesterol leads to heart disease is when it is combined with
inflammation. Not as crazy as you’d think as its only now after
decades that we’re starting to see doubt being raised as to the
benefits of statins. Hard for a profession to admit they’ve been
giving the wrong advice for years.

Thanks guys.
Yes I have read a lot, and watched a lot of Youtube videos on
the subject, and it just makes sense that with a disease of high
blood sugar, I should be restricting the things that raise blood
sugar the most. And the icing on the cake is that they way of
eating just suits me. I struggle to eat 2,000 calories a day at
this point, and often find myself "having" to eat stuff I don't
particularly want to keep the calories up. That's fine by me.
By Cholesterol was already a bit high, but I had gathered that
it would almost certainly go up before it comes down, and that
as long as the ratios are favourable it shouldn't be a problem?
My GP really wants me to take a Statin, but I refused. She says
if my numbers don't come down by the time my 3 month check up
comes around, I'll "have" to take it. Of course this is a worry
because like I say, the numbers will almost certainly get better
before they get worse. but we'll crossthat bridge when we come
to it. I really don't want to take the statin, but I know
when I'm beaten.
Yeah, 3 stone is good going, but I really do feel like I am only
just getting started. My ultimate target 16 stone, I remember
being pretty lean and in good shape at 16 stone, before the
strongman bug convinced me I HAD to be 20+ stone. Will be a
total weight loss of 7 stone, but I'm pretty confident I can do
it.
I'd like to get the diabetes reversed (although you are never
"cured" as such) ..but in other ways I really do think its the
best thing thats happened to me in a long while. Otherwise I
would have been just waiting to have a Heart Attack or a Stroke
or something equally nasty, and justifying it by my ever
diminishing ability to lift heavy weights... No more, that shit
stops now. As far as my health is concerned, even WITH the
diabetes I am coming out of this in a much better state.

The fact that you're insulin resistant and carbohydrates have
the most dramatic impact on insulin, means eliminating them will
help balance things better. It's by far the best diet large
people can go on. That and increasing output (like you already
have) is the way to go.
You've got this well under control mate, keep on trucking.
