Doc, if you weren't paying 40% tax on some of your earnings,
then you'd have much less chance of sending your child to uni.
You have that mixed up for start. Besides, it's not tax
efficient to pay 40% for absolutely longer than necessary so you
should look to fund pension with earnings above 50k into a sipp.

kept me on youtube for a while once I started watching that
milton friedman vid, ended up watching other debates with him.
There is lot to learn when watching these videos. He wants
privatisation and very little or no government control.

Sorry TP , I see this the exact opposite , I am a higher earner
, so if i struggled to get my child into uni , then most other
people would too , so there would either be no uni's or much
cheaper uni's.
If I didn't pay 40% I would certainly have a few extra grand a
month and yes i could afford uni fees .I would agree with your
argument if the country was a basket case of debt and we ran a
balanced budget , but we dont , all the public services provided
out of this 40% are a waste and a drain beyond what they need to
be.
also I do overpay my pension , 15% from me , 10% matched from
company. with my bodybuilding lifestyle my worry is that i wont
ever see it .

Doc, we have to use the system we have as best we can, I also
pay 40% tax, I resent it, I also resent how much NI I and my
company has to pay. I can't do much to change it except to use
the rules to my best advantage.
I think you are missing something else, you don't have to pay
for your child to go to uni, that is what the loans are for,
plus part time work. If there was no funding for university at
all and it was down to parents to fund then clearly only the
wealthiest in society could send their children. I don't think
this is fair, I could send my kids, but my parents couldn't have
sent me.
I am a capitalist, I have my own business, but I don't see the
benefit in restricting education to only those that can afford
it. It certainly doesn't benefit society as a whole, because you
are putting the conditions in place that don't educate the
poorest, and it's the poorest in society which are the problem
isn't it? In terms of taking out significantly more than they
put in? Crime? etc
I don't think a degree is the be all and end all, I don't have
one but did go to uni for a year, so it isn't essential, but for
some professions clearly it is needed.

thats just accounting not economics, student loans mean I will
probably pay anyway just not directly but either through taxes
or inflation . When student loans weren't available tuition was
a lot cheaper and most youths could afford this through working
whilst studying , this was always the case for the majority of
the time , only now we have imposed a minimum pay rate a lot of
these jobs have disappeared/been outsourced or been automated .
Its supply and demand if kids want it they will afford it , yes
some will suffer but who would have been the best brains but now
we have a system where everyone will suffer, at the same time
the richest, best innovative companies we have weren't born out
of education .
We still have an education system based on remembering facts and
making mental calculations and recalling them for a one off exam
, we have computers that do that in nanoseconds . We have
people with degrees that have no real marketable value who can't
open a door correctly or carry out a conversation. The only
thing they are god at is passing exams . when they start
teaching innovation and entrepreneurship I would reconsider ,
although i believe that is something you just cant teach.
But whilst education is being subsidised for being poor it will
never move on , even my doctor will google search my symptoms ,
which I dont mind, at least hes using some initiative .
