Animal welfare

How much do you know about the welfare of the animals we eat etc
and how much does it effect your diet and food choices?
I've never really thought about the way they are treated in this
country and I always assume the real horror videos you see are
from other countries or not the norm. I only buy free range eggs
but I've never noticed weather or not their are more expensive
meats for better treatment or whatever.
I don't think I could ever be vegan and being vegetarian would
be a struggle, but I think if I knew animals were treated really
badly I'd cut my meat consumption down massively.

I care about their welfare but I suspect less than most.
Got a friend who's animal crackers and vegan obviously and I
regularly have eggs from her. The hens are treat better than
royalty lol. I once asked her how taking the eggs away from the
birds for the benefit of humans fitted in with her veganism
citing that they were not her eggs to take. She just gave me a
funny look and thought I was taking the piss lol.
I don't have much time for animals tbh. I noticed a pigeon on my
drive with an obvious broken wing. My thoughts ran along the
lines of 'well that's 1 less shit machine making a shit show on
my patio...' My vegan friend found out about the pigeon and
collected it off the drive and cared for it for months on end
until it's dying day. She even named it after
me[emoji15][emoji13][emoji13]
We used to have kestrels nest closeby that kept the pigeon
numbers down. Not anymore and it's a bleedin free-for-all
Anyone know the legality angle of having a pop at a few with a
bb gun or air rifle on your own land? Srs btw

I know at my work they regularly hire a kestrel/hawk type bird.
Apparently once it's done a few fly byes over 2 or 3 days it
puts pigeons off nesting etc for quite a while

Your friend isn't vegan then, as she would not be keeping
chickens in the first place. Vegans don't believe in humans
using animals for anything unless it was to improve the animals
quality of life, so in her case the hens would need to be
'rescued'. And if they were rescued, then giving away the eggs
for human consumption is contradicting that. So she may have a
vegan diet, but she isn't vegan. I bet they are bloody nice eggs
though.
Animal welfare purely depends on the cost of the final product.
If you are buying the finest corn fed chicken then chances are
the animal has had a relatively good life, looked after by ifs
farmers and has been free to roam. Which is why it costs more.
If you buy value frozen chicken breasts then they have lived a
relatively short life, with little to no room to free roam.
There is no such thing as good quality cheap meat.
I still think that British standards of animal welfare are
amongst the best in the world though in the grand scheme of
things. America raves about american quality beef and the likes,
but the reality is it is pumped full of steriods and
antibiotics, which is why its not allowed to be imported here.
I honestly do think that we would all be better off eating less
meat, but making sure that when we do we are only eating high
quality meat. However it's a very big ask though for the
majority of people, who often laugh at the thought if it. Meat
production and factory farming is high because there is a demand
for it, I admit I sometimes buy cheap meat as it is often the
best option I have for my budget. But I am trying to rely on it
less.

I always wonder about this myself. I've shot a pigeon in my back
garden before and just put it in a bag in the wheelie bin.
Another time I shot a Magpie and it seemed like the entire
magpie population was watching judging by the racket they made,
so I got too nervous to do it again cause I'm not sure on the
legality of it.

For what reason? We are animals. We have incisors. We have the
ability to process large amounts of flesh. We are designed to
run on meat and we have been for 1000’s of years. If it wasn’t
for meat, the human race would not exist.
I live 80-90% of my life as a pure carnivore. I cannot begin to
tell you how much this has benefited me.
It’s almost like medicine. For my body and my mind. When I do
eat carbs and veg, or have a few beers or a dessert , I notice
the difference.
But most people will not even try this way of living.. mostly
because it’s expensive or they just will not give up the dirty
carb/ sugar addiction they’re on.

This was always my point in vegan threads. Everybody is
different. Some people do best on pure meat others on pure
plants. People differ a lot.
If I had to choose vegan or carnivore it would certainly be
carnivore. I've never tried either but that is my guess. I feel
ok eating both.
I think eating healthy animals is better for own health and from
a moral stance. In my eyes your violating natures laws or what
mother nature intended if cows, pigs, chickens, deer ect are not
tap dancing and so it will effect you. Your body/nature will
know when you violated a law. To be healthy you have to play the
game which nature set and play to those rules.

A few years ago I had some pretty bad digestive issues and tried
all sorts to even improve them. Never vegetarian but was heading
veggie heavy but no real improvement. Until I heard a keto
advocate on the Joe Rogan show. Smash cut, this has lead me down
all sorts of roads and info to where I live a pretty much
carnivore lifestyle and for me and many others with inflammatory
digestive issues it has been a God send. Live completely
normally now and have no intention of changing it. As I’ve said
before it scares the living piss out of me when I see some of
the nonsense people who have the power to control what we eat
spout at times.

You cut off the bit I put on the end of that sentence lol, which
was only eat high quality meat. I think we are all relying on
poor quality meat too often now, because it is there for us to
buy. It is readily available because there is a demand for it,
so it’s not going to change.
I 100% agree that we as humans were designed to run on meat, we
have the correct teeth and digestive systems etc, we are
superior and we are top of the food chain.
However, we as humans should also have morals, and a higher
sense of empathy towards other living things. The topic wasn’t a
pro vegan/carnivore debate, it is about animal welfare.
If all our meat sold in the shops was of a high quality from
animals raised to a high standard, or it was wild and hunted,
then animal welfare wouldn’t be seen as a problem. However, that
wouldn’t keep up with demand.
Cavemen ate meat and berries because they ate to survive, and
that was all that was available to them at the time. They would
have lived off potato’s and rice if they knew it existed.
If I had to choose between verge or carnivore, I would 100%
choose carnivore, I love meat and fish that much I would not
want to give it up, even if it meant eating cheaper meat.
But if I was forced to eat less meat, because the government
laid down a law that all meant all meat must be of the highest
quality and therefore more expensive, then I would still
survive, it’s all food at the end of the day.
