       The new guidelines don't look so very different from previous
       guidelines--and there is almost no emphasis on addressing
       hearing loss.
       In my uneducated opinion, untreated hearing loss can contribute
       to dementia. Over the past 10 years or so I have watched a
       neighbor sink into dementia while struggling with an apparently
       uncorrectable profound hearing loss. At first she would think
       she'd heard right and answer the question she thought she'd
       heard, often without ever realizing that she had misheard.  Then
       she developed a habit of repeating a question or a comment
       countless times to the same person.  Later she started talking
       about situations that didn't exist.  She was taken to a hospital
       eventually because she'd fainted--and it turned out she was
       severely malnourished. She may have been forgetting to eat. She
       is currently in an assisted living facility but has almost no
       memory even for neighbors here whom she's seen daily for many
       years.
       This situation might not have turned out so tragically if her
       hearing loss could have been remedied, but that's just my take
       on it.
