       Prior authorization isn't referral authorization

       The maze of the current US health insurance system can be
       daunting, as I found out recently when I had to change
       arrangements for maintenance of my hearing aids. In the past
       several years I've gone to an audiologist who was in partnership
       with an ENT doctor, and both of them took care of my hearing
       aids, hearing tests, and ears, which have to be cleaned so that
       the hearing aids will work better. The ENT doctor can also spot
       inflammation or infection that might be brewing and treat them.
       The new arrangement is similar: audiologists in partnership with
       ENT doctors, but for my regular visit recently I was told I
       needed a prior authorization just to see the ENT doctor, whom
       I'd already seen previously, and I needed to get that from my
       primary care doctor.
       When I called the primary care doctor I was told she would need
       to see me before she could sign off on it. A later conversation
       with the audiology/ENT clinic disclosed that actually what was
       needed was a referral authorization.
       It is different from a prior authorization. Maybe I was told
       wrong the first time. Or maybe I heard wrong--quite possible.
       AI has provided an explanation of the difference:
