What not to say to an older person

As an older person maybe I'm just getting too thin-skinned.
However, ageism seems to be real, at least here in the US, in
spite of all of the lip-service being given to "our seniors."
The public transit system in my community even has a status
called Honored Citizen for people over a certain age (who get a
       slight discount on transportation).
Honored Citizen? How honored is it whenever you make a comment,
you're apt to be told (with a gentle laugh because the person is
trying to be kind), "Oh, that's not how things are now" or
       "You're talking about ages ago."
What is this really saying? If you keep hearing it, as I do,
doesn't it amount to saying, "You might be an amusing old fossil
but your contributions to this discussion are just laughable and
of no value to those of us who have moved with the times. Get
       lost"?
I like to think I never made this kind of remark to any older
person when I was younger. But it's amazing how many people like
to show how youthful and trendy they are by replying to me in
       this vein.
OK, you're up to the minute. I'm not. If you find what I have to
say to be laughably out of touch with the world as it now is,
why not silently move on and ignore me? Why is there a need to
remind me of how remote from reality I am at my age?
