The homeless crisis in the US

This kind of scene is very common on the streets of the city
where I live--and in many other US cities, and homelessness is a
national disgrace.
Only some of the homeless are drug addicts or mentally troubled
people. Many are people with families. Some have their pets with
them. Those in tents and other encampments are just some of the
homeless among us. Many others are living in vehicles.
Property owners have been permitted to charge outrageous rents
and to slap on extraordinary fees, making it almost impossible
for a low-income person to afford even a minimal rental unit.
This has been going on for a long time and the situation has
been worsening.
I'm using this space today to put in a plea for more compassion
for the homeless in our midst. If you've ever faced homelessness
as even a remote possibility, you will have had some notion of
how catastrophic a situation it is to find yourself without
shelter.
Please do what you can to help put an end to this calamitous
situation.
