This is one more way in which the US medical system is broken.
It is also one more instance of the vast chasm between the haves
and the have-nots in this country. A while back we heard about
"food deserts"--low-income areas where supermarkets were
nonexistent, and residents in the community resort to fast-food
options or travel long distances, often on public
transportation, just to get groceries. Now it seems that
pharmacies are abandoning the poorer areas. They don't make
enough money serving patients on Medicare or Medicaid.
