From Medpage Today (April 24, 2024)--"Dozens of deaths show
risks of injecting sedatives into people restrained by police":

The practice of restraining people and then injecting them with
sedatives goes back much farther than 2012, however. In the
1970s through a mistake I found myself in a community mental
health center that was meant as a temporary holding center for
people having mental problems. They were to be assessed there by
a group of medical professionals and then sent to some more
permanent location, often a state mental hospital.
Sometimes a person was brought in screaming and thrashing around
violently but being restrained by several law officers, who
wrestled the person into a situation--one of the hospital
beds--where the injection was given. It was a brutal process,
and the person's consent was not sought.
Surely there are better ways of calming a distraught person
       down.
