I don't think I've posted this before. It has many useful
suggestions for making life easier and safer.

Suction-type grab bar

The WebMD link in the previous post mentions grab bars. I'm a
fan of grab bars--though they absolutely have to be secure.
Although my bathroom has several grab bars already installed, I
wanted another one. I found a suction-type that is supposed to
work on a painted wood surface.
My plan was to install it on the side of a bathroom cabinet.
This particular grab bar seems to be meant primarily for a
shower "surround" or some other very nonporous surface. I have
my doubts about how long this grab bar will hold on painted wood
but it was very easy to install.
And the really beautiful part of it is that it has a built-in
safety indicator. When the suction is starting to fail, a couple
of green lights will turn red to let me know.
It's made of hard plastic and feels more comfortable than metal
grab bars.
I will follow up later with a report on how long the suction
lasts. Some user reviews indicated dissatisfaction with the
product because they had to keep reinstalling the grab bar when
it lost its suction.
This isn't just ordinary suction. You clamp it firmly into
place. It's hard to believe that this would work but I'm giving
it a try.

The grab bar has been in place for 5 days now, with no sign of a
red warning light. The two indicators are still green as they
should be if the suction is holding.
It has a better feel to it than the metal grab bars, IMO. The
plastic is warmer and just a bit more friendly somehow.

A couple of months after being very happy with this grab bar, it
fell down with quite a loud crash in the middle of the night,
waking me up and possibly disturbing some neighbors. And I'd
been keeping an eye on that indicator strip that is supposed to
let you know when the suction is weakening by turning from green
to red.
It apparently changes to red without giving a person very much
time to adjust it because it was green not 36 hours before it
fell.
I could have returned it for a refund if less than 30 days had
elapsed since I bought it, and so I was out of luck, I thought.
But I wrote up my experience on Amazon, and lo and behold! The
seller promptly answered and issued me a complete refund.
I notice that the price for the grab bar has come down. It was
$26 at the time I ordered it but I was charged (and refunded)
only $23.
I can no longer trust it to stay up, and so I'll use it only
when I can apply it right before I need it and remove it right
afterwards. It is easy enough to install and remove but of very
limited use.
