Hearing loss and dementia risk

I've probably posted about this before but it's worth mentioning
it again. As someone who's been wearing hearing aids for years,
I think I realize how vulnerable hearing-impaired people are to
dementia--or to being mistaken for demented.
It goes like this if your hearing is impaired: You hear someone
say something. You think you've heard it right. After all, for
most of your life you've heard things right. Of course you heard
this right even if you have a few nagging doubts about some
fuzziness in the sound. So you assume you've heard what you
think you've heard.
And you reply--to what you think you've heard. Then you're
surprised when the conversation ends abruptly or if you get an
odd look from the person you were talking to.
If this happens often enough and you give it some thought, and
especially if you know other people who are having the same
problem, you gradually realize that your replies often have
nothing to do with what the person said to you. So you end up
looking as if you're not right in the head.
If this keeps up long enough, it probably leads to a situation
where you genuinely are demented. The world no longer makes
sense to you. What people are saying can't be figured out. You
give up. You stay apart from people so you won't have to
interact with anyone. Then the dangers of isolation catch up
with you....

via hearing aids may lower dementia risk":
