Cage questions
By: ~Skittle Date: February 26, 2017, 9:08 pm

Hi! I am hoping I can get mice, but I need to know how to care
for them first! (I will have to only have to have one hamster so
I hope it's not for a while :-\ )
I need to know the recommended minimum. Are bin cages good/ok?
(I have 2 (occupied at the moment) and anymore tips or advice!

Thanks Zofia! I definitely will have enough. What happens if a
"female" is a male?

The minimum recommendation for 1 mouse is 200 square inches, so
if you want a male that is the minimum. However females need
companionship, it's best to keep them in pairs or trios. For a
pair the minimum is 400 square inches and for a trio it is 600
square inches.
Bin cages and tanks are great! Just make sure to have really
good ventilation, as their pee really stinks and will make their
cage smell very fast. Also keep in mind you will need to change
their bedding fully about every 2 weeks, that is saying you spot
clean just about every day.
Hope this helps!

Actually, you can keep 3 females or one male in a 200 square
inch (10 gallon tank) cage. I don't think you have to add that
much to the minimum for one for multiple mice. A 600 square inch
cage is too big to pack with toys, and it is harder to tame mice
that are in a large a habitat like that.

Could I use a 600 square inch at all?

As long as you pack it with toys and fill it with mice, then
yes! It's just not as helpful to have a big cage with mice as it
is with hamsters.

So.... what are some cheap cages that are a good size for a
pair? I could use a bin as a temporary cage/cage if mouse ends
up being male and not female. Other question: What are the
chances of getting a mis-sexed mouse?

I have gotten 4 out of my 5 girls from a pet store, and not one
of them was mis-sexed. Same with my boys, which are both from
pet stores. Not to say it is impossible, I've definitely heard
of it happening a few times. It really depends on how careful
the pet store is, and how trained the employee sexing them is.
It is pretty obvious to spot a boy, they have a large bulge near
their back end, which females don't have. They can hide it, but
most of the time it's easy to tell.

A 10 gallon tank works best for this purpose, remember to get a
lid! I actually recommend getting at least 3 females, with two
there is sometimes an incomplete hierarchy. One might just bully
the other all the time, without a peacekeeper. Twos can work out
as well, but with trios, if one dies, they have a friend to
comfort them until you add a new mouse.
