feature not a bug

I would say the Khashoggi killing is a feature, not a bug, of
the new authoritarian rise. That is, the people who support the
authoritarians will be okay with it, rather than outraged.
Are you?

Authoritarianism is on the rise. Not just in the United States.
Right-wing nationalist movements are gaining in Europe and
South America. The rise of MBS and the normalizing of Saudi
totalitarianism on the world stage is the same movement.
A main vector of authoritarianism is discrediting and destroying
the press. Totalitarian dictatorships, like Russia and Saudi
Arabia, assassinate reporters. That is what this is.
Authoritarian nationalists will consider this a win. Those who
downplay it, who pretend it was not deliberate, are flying cover
for the authoritarians. It remains to be seen if they can get
away with it.

Very interesting. How do you see this spreading in the United
States?

Almost no one believes the story as far as I can tell. Did you
not see Brainy's question?

"Fake news!"
[/quote]
It's seen every day on social media sites. People exhorting
others to vote red or vote blue which are really calls to vote
for the party rather than the candidate. Both parties have, and
have always had their share of extremists but these day it
appears the extremists have taken over. People on the left
accuse those on the right of being uneducated among a list of
other things while many of those on the right accuse the left of
being vile, violent traitors out to destroy the country. If one
party is able to have complete control over the 3 branches of
government for a long enough period of time, our current form of
government will cease to exist in this country. We have a
President who encourages nationalism, who treats this country as
though it's a part of his business empire, who loves adoration,
and power, and who is undermining the intelligence agencies, the
DOJ, and the free press at every opportunity as well as publicly
demeaning anyone he feels is not completely in step with what he
wants. Governments are not always changed, or done away with
through coups or other forceful means....sometimes the change
from one form of government to another occurs slowly, one
seemingly innocuous step towards "something better" after
another, until one day the population wakes up and finds their
countries form of government gone and another form in control.
