Katherine Jackson, the matriarch of the famous Jackson
family, of singers and musicians was born May 4, 1930, as Katie
B. Screws in Barbour County, Alabama. The daughter of Martha
Mattie Upshaw and Prince Albert Scruse. As a child,
Katherine contracted polio. While she eventually recovered from
her illness, the disease left the young girl with a life long
long limp. At the age of four, her family moved to East
Chicago, Indiana, and changed Katherine's name to
Katherine Esther Scruse.
Katherine met Joseph Jackson when she was still a teenager.
Joseph Jackson was a boxer and aspiring musician. The couple
married in November, 1949. They moved to Gary, Indiana, and
had 10 children over the next 16 years. While her husband
worked as a crane operator at U.S. Steel, Katherine raised the
children. A devout Jehovah's Witness, Katherine brought up
the children in her faith, and with strict discipline. A
pianist and a singer, she also encouraged the family's musical
talents. Michael later credited his mother with giving him
his vocal gifts.
After Joe, noticed the childrens' various musical abilities,
he devoted himself to molding them into a well-rehearsed group.
In 1964, The Jackson Five was formed, consisting of Jackie,
Jermaine, Marlon, Michael and Tito Jackson. As their family
grew, the group performed at talent shows and opening acts that
took them to places such as the renowned Apollo Theatre in
Harlem, where they won an amateur-night competition in
1967. During this time, Katherine was the group's designer,
making suits for her sons to wear during their
performances.[/b
]
After the Jackson Five signed with Mowtown Records in
1968, Katherine took a backseat on the group's affairs.
However, she continued to be a supportive mother. As her
son, Michael skyrocketted to fame as a solo artist, she stuck by
his side, through his highs and lows, from his success
with the album Thriller to his 2005 struggle with false child
molestation charges.
In June, 2009, Katherine was pulled back into the media
spotlight when her son, Michael Jackson, died of acute propofol
intoxication. In a copy of Michael's will, his mother was
listed as the guardian of his three children. She was also
named as one of the recipients of his estimated $500 million
fortune.

Joseph Walter Jackson was born July 26, 1929, in Fountain
Hill Arkansas, the eldest of five children. His father, Samuel
Jackson, was a high school teacher, and his mother, Crystal Lee
King, was a housewife. The couple split up when Joseph
was 12. He moved with his father, to Oakland, California,
while his mother moved to East Chicago, Indiana. When he
turned 18, he moved to Indiana to live near his
mother.
While in Indiana, he began pursuing his dreams of becoming a
boxer. He found success with the Golden Gloves, and was
preparing for a professional athletic career when he met
Katherine Scruse. He was already married at the
time, but he had his union quickly annuled to be with
Katherine.
The couple married, and moved into a two-bedroom house in
Gary, Indiana. Their first child, Maureen Reilette "Reebie"
Jackson was born. Joe decided to leave his life as a
boxer in order to support his family. He began to work as a
full-time operator for U.S. Steel. In the meantime,
Katherine tended to their growing family;they would go on to
have 10 children(son Brandon Jackson died at birth).
But, while Joseph Jackson may have given up his dreams of
becoming a boxer,he was still determined to make it big.
In the mid-1950's, Joseph started a band called The Falcons,
with his brother Luther. The group split up after a
couple of years later after they failed to gain noteriety.
In 1963, however, Joseph noticed his childrens' musical
talents. The Jackson brothers formed a group, later titled The
Jackson Five, Joseph serving as the group's manager.
Joseph booked the Jackson 5 in venues until they landed a
spot at the renowned Apollo Theatre, in Harlem, New York. The
group won an amateur night contest, and later they earned
a Mowtown contract. The Jackson Five became the first American
group to have their first four singles go straight to number
1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. With the money he
earned, from managing the group, Joseph moved the family out of
Indiana into a mansion, in Encino,
California.
However, tensions within the group caused deep rifts
within the family. In 1979, Michael fired his father, as his
manager, and took control of his own career. The rest of the
Jackson brothers would follow suit in 1983.
