KENT, Ohio - A Kent State researcher helped discovered a new
species of hermit crab that is now named after the King of Pop.
The fossil was found in northern Spain by a group of
paleontologists on June 25, 2009, the same day that Michael
Jackson died. The research team was sitting in a restaurant
later that day when they learned the news that the man known for
hits songs like “Billie Jean,” “Beat It” and “Man in the Mirror”
       had passed away.
"Michael Jackson's music will no doubt live a very long time and
influence many people so I think the name is appropriate," said
Adiël Klompmaker, a Ph.D. candidate in Department of Geology at
Kent State. That’s how the hermit crab that lived about 100
million years ago ended up with the name mesoparapylocheles
       michaeljacksoni.
"This is right in the middle of the Cretaceous period, when
dinosaurs were dominating the continents. In this area in
northern Spain, we find many invertebrate fossils, such as
corals, algae, sea urchins, but also a wide variety of crabs,”
       Klompmaker said.
What makes this particular hermit crab fossil so rare is that
researchers are not sure what the crab used for protection.
Hermit crabs now use empty snail shells, but in this area of
Spain and at that time period snail shells were uncommon.
Kent State researchers also recently found the oldest fossil
       shrimp in the world.
"Kent State is the one of the leading universities in the world
studying fossil decapod crustaceans, such as crabs, lobsters,
shrimp, and hermit crabs," Klompmaker said.
