       Snow's Memories/flashbacks/snippets from the past

[font=andale mono]Images kept floating through his mind, a much
younger him chasing around two other white haired kids, laughing
and protesting as he caught them and tagged them. A woman that
looked like him, the same hair and eyes smiling fondly as she
watched them play. Calling to them to come in for their meal,
her golden crown glinting in the afternoon light.
A tall white haired, regal looking man coming out to wrap an arm
around the woman and kissing her. Calling her his darling.
A red haired man, with a matching beard kneeling in front of
him, with a proud look on his face. Lifting him up high and
spinning around in a wide circle. Then turning him upside down
and tickling him until he couldn't breath.
The cry of a baby filling his ears, him sneaking a peak in to
see the red haired man holding a newborn child and motioning him
to come into the tent. His smaller hands taking the baby and
holding it close, marveling over the small face and hands.
Kissing the baby on the forehead and promising to keep watch
       over the little girl.

"He's only 9 years old and you're going to send my son off into
the wild? Why would you do that? He's a child Caltharas!"
The boy in question was hiding behind a curtain, listening in on
the conversation going on between his parents, biting his bottom
       lip.
"He's going to be the next emperor, Tahvia love. He has to see
what's out there in the world. Experience it before he's tied to
one place. I don't want him to feel stuck like I do. If my
father had allowed me to go out; perhaps I wouldn't be so
       jealous of my brother,"
"Darling..I know it's been hard on you. I know you want our son
to experience everything that you didn't get to. But couldn't it
wait until he's a little older?"
"I feel that's an excuse you will use every time I suggest
this." The emperor sighed. "And he'll never get the chance.
He'll be safe, he'll be with Halder. You know my brother would
give his life for him. He loves Cal as if he were his own son."
Cal heard his mother sigh heavily and peered out from the
curtain to see his father put an arm around her. "He's growing
up my love. YOu can't keep him here forever,"
"I know..I just..I have a bad feeling about him going." Tahvia
replied, a worried look in her eyes.
Cal saw his father's eyes flash bright white. "Have you had a
vision about something going wrong? I'll keep him home if you
       have."
Tahvia shook her head slowly. "No..it's more a mother's
intuition than anything. Maybe I am being too overprotective.
Add a group of the silent guard along..that should ease my mind
       a bit."
"I"ll send two groups," The emperor decided, wanting to ease his
wife's as much as he could.

Halder kept a close eye on his young nephew, never allowing the
boy more than a few feet from him at all times. It wasn't that
he didn't trust the silent guard to watch him, but more that he
felt responsible for the young boy. He would never forgive
himself if something happened to the wide-eyed youngster.
       "Hey Uncle..what's that?"
Halder turned following the boy's pointing finger to spy a bird
flying overhead. "It looks like a hawk. Out here it's probably a
red-tailed hawk." He said with a smile.
The look on young Cal's face made Halder wonder if perhaps the
boy would bond with a bird. It wouldn't surprise him that much.
THe boy had always been fascinated and drawn to birds.
And..maybe out here the boy would finally find the animal he was
to bond with. That would be a good experience for him.
His brother the Emperor would be quite pleased and proud of the
       boy. As would his mother.
This made Halder recall how the boy's mother had clung to him
before they had left. He'd do everything in his power to make
sure the boy got back to his mother.

The sight of his Uncle being speared through the gut; pulled a
scream from Cal's lungs. "NO! UNCLE!" He cried out, starting to
       move towards the man.
A hand grabbed him pulling him back. "Cal...no...we must run.
They will kill us," Inga insisted, desperation in her tone as
she glanced around at the Red King's fanatics and their fighting
the general's men and slaughtering them.
       "But..Uncle.."
"He won't survive..he would want us to live. Come with me, Run
       Cal!"
Cal sobbed but followed her order, running as fast as he could.
He grew tired, and his feet ached, but he still ran, fear and
horror racing through him. He didn't want to get caught by those
       people.
       "Over this way Cal!"
He turned to see Inga motioning him to follow her toward a huge
stone wall. "Won't they just follow us over?" Cal asked,
trotting towards her trying to catch his breath.
"Not if they want to fight the entire clan of Hawk Women," Inga
muttered and led him to a shorter spot and boosted him up to the
top. "Here..take Dove," She said handing up Cal's little cousin
to him. The little girl had been eerily silent their entire
flight there. He took the little girl and hugged her close to
       his chest.
"HOw are you gonna get up?" Cal asked, realizing that the short
woman couldn't get up on her own.
"Cal..you need to listen to me, take Dove, find the clan..tell
       them what's happened. They shouldn't be too far. I can't come. I
have to keep them from coming after you. I need you to take
care of Dove. Teach her about her parents..how we loved her. Can
       you do that?"
The boy's eyes widened and his chin trembled slightly. He
nodded, tears still staining his cheeks. "Yes Inga..I"ll do
       that." He promised.
"Cal..my real name is Soaring With Wind. Now go..be careful
       jumping down,"

       The General's last Stand
Halder put his hand around the spear that had gone through his
gut, and let out a groan of pain. Around him, there were the
sounds of his men and the silent guards fighting off the
fanatics. He'd thought after killing the man possessed by their
evil Red King that they'd have scattered. He'd been wrong.
Thoughts of his love, Inga, their child, and his nephew
flickered through his mind. His eyes flashed, going a bright
brilliant blue and he saw where their footsteps had gone. South
East..towards Inga's people. That's where they had been headed
when he'd encountered the possessed man. Had he not seen just
how dangerous the Red King was, he'd have left the man alone.
Now..here he was dying. Wishing to see his mate's face one more
time..kiss his child and tell his nephew to live a good long
       life.
"Stupid man!" A voice spat above him. "You think you killed our
God? Our Red King still lives on. You merely delayed his return
to the mortal realm. Now you will die..and die for nothing. I
       curse you, idiot man!"
Halder's eyes shot open, sparking bright blue making the
priestess curse and back away in shock at the sight.
"I may die, but I will take you with me," Halder's voice rang
out, loud enough to bring fear into the fanatic's hearts. Before
the priestess could move, he was on his feet in one swift
motion, his double-headed axe out and cutting her body in half.
The top part slid and thumped to the ground, and Halder's eyes
flashed even brighter. "Death to the fanatics!" He bellowed as
he used his last breaths to take out a dozen more of the Red
King's followers before he finally died from his wounds and a
dozen more he got during his last stand.
When it was over; The fanatics stepped back from his body and
the armor he wore, fearful looks on their faces. One bold one
tried to take his axe and was electrocuted instantly, dying in
great agony. The others decided to leave the body where it lay,
as a warning to others like him. It was that day when the mother
priestess decided to start hunting down any child with any sort
of powers or odd looks, in hopes of turning one to their side.
One of power would keep more like him from destroying them.
