       Nicaragua's largest private company

       With ties to the Nicaraguan Economic and Social Development Fund
       are under investigation. All are similarly accused of
       facilitating foreign interference in the country. There are also
       threats of prosecution against Humberto Bailey, a former Ortega
       opponent and minister in the government of Violetta Chamorro.
       Prominent journalists including presidential candidates Miguel
       Mora and Miguel Mendoza were detained from April to October.
       Liberal MP María Fernanda Flores de Aleman, wife of former
       President Arnoldo Aleman, was also arrested on the same day.

       on October 1. Two students, Max Jerez
       and Lester Aleman, publicly challenged Ortega Murillos. Four
       peasant leaders, Medardo Mairena, Pedro Mena, Freddy Navas and
       Pablo Morales. Other opposition figures were placed under house
       arrest at the end of the month and the beginning of the month.
       Journalist Jaime Arellano, presidential candidate Noel Vidore,
       vice-presidential candidate, former Miss Nicaragua, Berenice
       Quesada, or imprisoned, former foreign minister Ze, who tried to

       It is understood that some of them were not only mistreated and
       humiliated in detention but also held in particularly harsh
       prison conditions. Defendants are not allowed to meet with their
       families or lawyers and are threatened with imprisonment if they
       protest against these conditions of detention. Their relatives
       are also threatened with imprisonment. Former foreign minister
       Xavier Aguirre-Sacasa, who sought exile in Costa Rica, and
       prominent political commentator José Antonio Peraza. It is
       understood that some of them were not only mistreated and
       humiliated in detention but also held in particularly harsh
       prison conditions.
