       "Slightly" pitted M38 Carcano
       By: racerguy00 Date: September 26, 2014, 9:45 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Snagged this well-used M38 carbine a little bit ago on a whim. I
knew it was rough, but I like the honest wear look. When it
arrived I was surprised by the amount of grease packed
EVERYWHERE on this carbine. When I wiped it of and saw the
amount of pitting my hopes for a good shooter sank.
This carbine has a small CAI import stamp on the barrel, so it
wasn't imported in the 50's and 60's, but relatively recently.
Beat up and well-worn stock that had so much grease on/in it I
had to put it in a black garbage bag in the sun to melt it out.
The action looked like it had been used to stir a vat of grease.
The bore had a plug of grease about 5 inches long inside. The
metal is almost in the white on the exposed surfaces, but nearly
100% under the wood. And.....the bore is MINT.
There was a huge amount of rust on only the exposed areas that
deeply pitted the metal that has been stabilized at some point
in time. Some of the spots on the receiver and rear sight are
actually large odd looking patches. Strange. Pits on the barrel
as well. ZERO pits or rust under the wood. The action locks up
nice and tight, and with the bore as nice as it is it should be
       a good shooter.

I'm right there with you, racerguy. I love the "honest wear"
look. As long as it doesn't effect the performance of the rifle,
I don't mind it at all. I kinda prefer it, actually.
Fantastic looking rifle, thanks for sharing!
