High number balkan Westinghouse (Better pics now)

I picked this high serial number Balkan NEW from a fellow
collector a while back, and finally was able to get a few
photos. Typical scrubbed Balkan rifle, with a gearwheel stamp in
the wood. Serial number 1116742 an it has an F suffix. This
places it at the tail-end of known rifles that were delivered to
Russian in WW1. There is an arrow M on the top tang indicating
Meridan manufacture. The barrel markings show extreme wear in
addition to the typical scrubbing, but the bore is decent.
This example has a sloppily applied varnish type finish that
actually ran down into the barrel channel in places and is under
the preservative grease in others. It also covers the stock
hardware. I have come to believe that this is simply an example
of another finish that sometimes is attributed to bubba but it
in fact was applied before import. It is impervious to alcohol
and is not garishly glossy like poly coated rifles tend to be.

That does not look like a bubba finish to me. I have seen a
number of Balkan rifles with a similar finish. When it was done,
I have no idea; but I also believe it is not a state side thing.
I like the Balkan wedge too.

I've had collectors with far more experience that I flat out
dismiss this finish on some rifles that I've picked up as a
bubba poly coat because "no balkan country used a varnish
finish". I've seen and handled enough now to say that is not
correct. The finish on these varies a ton, but side by side, a
poly coated stock looks far different than these do.
