Why do some FALs have wood furniture and some have polymer
furnature?

Depends on their age. When they first came out, they all had
wooden stocks. Then, with the advent of polymer being more
durable and not rotting away, it was favored more than wood.
It's also a hazard because if you get sprayed with
Nuclear/Biological/Chemical weapons, it sticks in the wood and
can cause problems. It won't stick in plastic and it can be
decontaminated easily.

It depended on the country issuing it AND the time period. High
strength plastics were coming into their own during the FAL's
use and some countries found it either more cost or more combat
effective to switch over from wood. The South African R1 can
even be found issued with a combo a wood and polymer furniture.
One of the things that makes collecting the FAL so interesting
is the variations. My personal favorites are the hand painted
Rhodesian FAL's. I wish I would have picked up one of the
Rhodesian parts kits when the were everywhere and cheap, oh well
:'(.

I had Aussie wood on my L1A1 but I just beat it up too much to
keep it on so I sold it :( . Oh well.

Personally I love wood and steel Guns and hate fragile Black
guns. I do like the FALs look though, if I get one from DSA how
much will it cost? Are they inch or metric versions?

Dsa is usually Metric, mine's an L1A1 so it's an Inch. Dsa's
have been going anywhere from 1100-1500 dollars new depending on
where you get them.
Awesome weapon though.
