       It's a varmint round. You need a headshot on a person, or it
       generally won't bring them down. If they are hopped up on some
       drug, it's even less effective.

       In the Vietnam war there was an instance of a VC getting super
       dosed on opium or something and taking 14 hits with a .308
       before he went down!

       fishheads and mama-sans opium? say it aint so!
       a heartshot is just as effective as a headshot,considering the
       ballistic tumbling upon impact,a smaller round will cause more
       internal damage vs. a large bore that blows straight through.the
       idea was to enable more fragmentation upon entry,thus creating
       more tissue damage over a wider area.that being said,the
       5.56/.223 isnt the IDEAL round for this,even a .243 or .270 is
       better,but the cost of mass production is cheaper and the weight
       of the basic load out is lighter.thats why the eggheads in the
       pentagon chose that caliber.

       +1, only way to live with it is shot placement.
