       1960 Vietnam bring back T53
       By: racerguy00 Date: December 29, 2013, 12:28 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I didn't post this one on GB because I don't need to hear from
the 'papers please' police. There is always a chance this isn't
       a bringback but I don't think so.
Rifle was painted black a long time ago, overseas or here is
uncertain. The black paint is consistant with communist rifles
that have been relegated to trainer status. The odd thing is
that the chamber has been demilled by the drilling of two big
holes in it. Their placement has led to the theory that this may
have actually been a booby trap since the holes are totally
hidden and are right under the finger grooves where your hand
would go. The bolt head had a glob of brazing over the bolt face
to render it inoperable, but a simple bolt swap could have
resulted in a disaster. I think the brazing was done stateside
to prevent an accident but it wasn't very effective. I plugged
the chamber to prevent a live round from ever being chambered.
The seller had no clue the holes were there.
This rifle had been displayed with two 1970 vintage luggage tags
in a VFW in New England for nearly 40 years. There are small
holes in the stock where it had been attached to a display
plaque. It took ALOT of cleaning to remove all of the tobacco
tar from the rifle. There was some type of badly deteriorated
wrap around the forearm and bayonet apparently to keep the
bayonet closed. It's remnants have adhered to the stock. The
front sight has an interesting modification, and a large crack
in the wrist has been repaired with brass nails.
When I tore the rifle down, one thing I found besides the holes
was a note in the barrel channel that reads Pat-To, Lam Dong
'69. A Google search brings up a Wiki article describing a
battle at a base named Pat-To, and the article has a decided
       North Vietnam slant to it.
Anyways, here are some photos. I know, buy the rifle not the
story, but for under $100 shipped I got something very
       interesting.

It says 'Pat-To Lam Dong '69
I thought it simply meant Pat went to Lam Dong in '69 but I
       googled it and found this:
  HTML http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Pat_To
Let me know what you think.

Is that the one you bought about a year ago Dave? I remember the
story, but don't remember seeing pics?

Same rifle. I had posted a few pics if it on the other forum,
       these ones are better.
Also of course no import marks anywhere.

I think given where the rifle was located, the paper in the
barrel, and the price you can safely call it a bring back. This
is a case where the story that came with the rifle is a
believable part of its history. Nice buy.

[/quote]Did you ever find out if Aussie soldiers could bring
       weapons home by chance?

Unfortunately Australian servicemen were not permitted to take
weapons home as war trophys at any point during the Vietnam War
or WW2 for that matter. That doesn't mean it 'didn't happen',
but the only 'bring-backs' of any kind that I know of are Lugers
from Germany, two brought back by Australian war correspondents.

Well, I actually stumbled upon an apparent bring-back yesterday.
Late Australian veteran is said to have returned with three
carbines, after serving with the training group in early 60s.
No documentation of course, but the seller was stripping these
rifles out for spare parts and selling the parts individually,
gave this to me dirt cheap, so I have no reason not to believe
       his story.
Looks to be a 1945 Izhevsk in what may be a T53 stock.

Good deal SS. I saw your post of that one. Great save.
Found another for you. Guy in New South Wales posted a Hungarian
m44 with middle eastern arabic writing on the butt in a facebook
group I hang around in. Doesn't know much about it though and
may not be for sale. Congrats on the Brownback!
