It all depends on the range. On a normal clean range I always
pick up the spent casings. When I shoot at Buffalo Rock's
plinking pit (super fun redneck rapid fire heaven) you can't
pick up you casings. You are standing on spent casings about 3
or 4 inches deep. If you drop a live round while loading, forget
about it you will never find it. It will sink below the spent
casings. I looked for a good 10 minutes the first time I did
that with no luck. Now I don't even bother. Oh, and don't bring
stripper clips there unless you don't mind losing those too. I
haven't yet, but I had a close call.

54r man, you don't pick up reloadable brass? My father loves
shooters like you. Saves him money on brass. Have you seen the
       price of brass recently?

I pick up everything... Steel case, surplus, berdan brass, boxer
       steel... I pick up everything!

I pickup my reloadables but I don't scrounge the range for
       brass.

If "Pick up" means clean up, yes. I clean up after myself so
there isn't a situation like Clay has with a layer of brass. I
keep the re-loadable stuff and chuck the steel cased. I keep
some kinds of berdan brass to trade/sell to people who have the
patience to reload that stuff, but that's it.

The range closest to me has you leave your brass where it is.
They pick it up and recycle it themselves. I'm careful not to
drop reloadable brass. I shoot semi-autos somewhere else where I
can pick everything up, but the range is farther away and not as
       nice.
