Excuse my ignorance, but what is the point if "ex-snipering" a
rifle? Seems counter productive to me?
[/quote]I think the need for them went down. In ww2 the Soviets
tactics were different than they are now. THink of them as not
necessarily snipers, but as also having a shitload of designated
marksmen in addition to their snipers.

So pretty much the SVT-40 was really the first DMR? And becuase
of the wider issue of SVT-40 among troops the need for sniper
was diminished? But still, wouldn't you want to have as many as
possible if/when the Cold War went hot?

I don't really know the answer to your question. You may want
to really dig in and research this or discuss it with someone
who is more well read on the subject than me.

On 7.62x54r net, It gives reasons of large numbers of snipers in
inventory, accuracy degradation, and cost of maintaining the
       optics.
